Congrats to Nicola and Joel – Winners in the Unconservative Contest
June 1, 2009 · By Greg Farries
Congratulations to Nicola Timmerman, her name was randomly chosen from the long list of people who voted in the top 10 unconservative poll.
Congratulations to Joel Schroeder, his entry – submitted via email – was one of the many entries that made up the number one unconservative thing the Conservative Party of Canada has done since coming into power: “Massive increases in government spending and a return to deficit spending.”
Both Nicola and Joel will be mailed their signed copies of Mark Steyn’s book, America Alone.
Thanks to everyone for participating!
Irresponsible Spending and Not Reigning in the HRC Voted Most Unconservative
June 1, 2009 · By Greg Farries
1574 people can’t be wrong! It’s been an interesting few weeks, but it looks like we now have a better idea of what the Conservative Party has to do (or not do) to bring themselves back in line with basic conservative ideology. The top three “unconservative” things the Conservative Party have done are:
-
Massive increases in government spending and a return to deficit spending 27% (432 votes)
-
Allowing the Human Rights Commission and Human Rights Tribunal to continue unhindered 22% (341 votes)
-
Giving billion dollar bailout packages to poorly run companies 21% (323 votes)
For the full breakdown of the 1574 votes, please visit the original post, “Top Ten Unconservative Contest Finalists!”
This contest should serve as a warning to the governing Conservative Party of Canada – winning the election was no small feat but it’s time to stop acting like the opposition and start acting like a conservative government. Since taking power in 2005, the Conservative Party of Canada has been so busy defining the opposition Liberal Party of Canada as corrupt and their leaders weak, that they have forgotten a key component to any successful initiative, they have neglected to define themselves. Let’s face it, it has been relatively easy to define the Liberal Party of Canada – the Liberal Party was to a certain degree corrupt and labeling the bumbling Stéphane Dion as weak certainly wasn’t rocket science – however, the Conservative Party seems content to define themselves as little more than, “not the Liberals.” With the passing of each day that particular definition loses more and more of it’s impact. The Liberals have a new leader and the corruption charges are behind them, they are no longer an easy target.
In order for the Conservative Party to be successful they need to define themselves clearly through well thought out and well executed conservative policy initiatives. They need to thoroughly explain and then sell those initiatives in a simple and straight-forward manner. They need to contrast those policy initiatives against the opposition’s left-wing and socialist alternatives and they need to convince Canadians that they’re ready to govern unhindered by a minority government. This is far easier said than done and it’s a departure from their current game plan, but considering their relative lack of success (electorally and in policy), do they have much choice?
Thank you to all of those visitors who submitted hundreds of entries and to the thousands who submitted a vote. Right now I’m going through the long list of “unconservative” entries and votes to determine which two will be the winner of the Mark Steyn book. I will announce the winners today after lunch. And the winners are…
Thanks to smalldeadanimals.com, conservativegrapevine.com, blazingcatfur.blogspot.com, fivefeetoffury.com, bluewavecanada.blogspot.com,and many others for linking to this contest and helping make it a success!
Please Welcome Mark Peters, the Newest Writer on ThePolitic.com

I would like to welcome long time blogger Mark Peters to the fold here at ThePolitic.com. Mark has been a staple in the Canadian political blogosphere for the past half decade; writing on markpeters.ca and then mark-peters.blogspot.com.
Mark will bring a unique perspective to ThePolitic.com – he’s the first maritimer to write for us – and I’m glad I was finally able to convince him to jump ship.
Top Ten Unconservative Contest Finalists!
May 26, 2009 · By Greg Farries
We received a lot of great entries to the Top Ten Unconservative Things… Contest. I spent most of the morning trying my best to narrow them down to just ten. However, I think most would agree that the ten entries below should accurately cover some of the disappointments many conservatives have had to endure.
Here is your opportunity to vote for your favorite unconservative entry. The author of the entry that receives the most votes will receive the signed copy of Mark Steyn’s book, America Alone (see note below). I’ve actually got two copies of America Alone, so I’m going to be giving away another copy to those who submit a vote. So after submitting a vote, please contact me or post a quick note in the comments section below. Make sure to remember to include a proper email address, so if your name is drawn i can contact you directly and get your mailing address.

I will explain more about the redesign and relaunch of ThePolitic.com after I’ve completed the integrating all the content. Thanks!
Firm announces closure but Quebec union still thinks they have jobs!
July 13, 2008 · By Charles Anthony
The American head office of the Aleris aluminum factory said they are closing the factory in Cap-de-la-Madeleine but the union still thinks they are in a lock-out position. The firm states clearly that the final decision to close the factory is a result of the situation created by the labor dispute.
The company has nearly fifty plants throughout the entire world and this recent closure involves only five percent of their global workforce. There does not seem to be much bargaining power in Quebec. Nevertheless, the union maintains it is still in a lock-out position just because the announcement has not technically been presented to the Quebec ministry of labor yet. To which I say: “Good luck with the negotiations!” and “Add this to the list of Quebec unions that prefer unemployment.”
Just when you think things are incredibly pathetic, the union announces it has a highly imaginative Plan B to work towards the re-opening of the plant:
«Aleris, s’il décide de mourir dans le marché, il y a certainement quelqu’un qui est prêt à reprendre le marché», croit Daniel Goyette.«On espère que le gouvernement va réagir»
If all else fails — abracadabra! — the government will step up to the plate!
