RD,
I hope you're not implying that I actually post under multiple account names. I would invite any admin to double-check. That would be very disingenuous for anyone, on any side of the debate.

I certainly can't disagree with the 'liberal' label around here, but at home I'm the conservative capitalist. It's all relative. :)

Dr. Dawg aside, few of those names have appeared at this site in an eternity.
I get your point though.

@RD
You're right; the contributors to ThePolitic all tend to lean to the right. However, not so for the commenters. I've been criticized from the left and the right on many of my posts.

Off the top of my head (and I've only been contributing for a couple of months) I can think of such commenters as Robert McClelland, balbulican, Dr. Dawg, Katherine, Nathan and Bill Stewart, whom I would consider to be "of the left" (if you'll excuse the crude categorization). I can't say how representative they are of our readers, but I think it shows that we have more than just a bunch of rightwingers here.

I always shudder when i hear politicians talk about “reinventing” the economy to meet a specific goal. They talk like it’s an actual achievable goal, like they can somehow overcome the natural cycles of capitalism and remake it in some utopian scheme.
Yeah, I know what you mean.

I started to roll my eyes after reading about the Guaranteed Whatever Income. Once May said that the Green Party's welfare scheme was different from Milton Friedman's after admitting that she did not know what Milton Friedman's suggestion actually was, I stopped reading.

Greg,
How many personalities does Abatoir have? I never really got the impression the majority, let alone the vast majority of commentators were not conservative on this site.
I'd say with the odd exception, we have a mix of conservative and libertarian comments with the odd liberal protest.

The "about" section for this site: "Conservative group weblog that publishes daily commentary on political events and topics affecting Canada, the United States and the world."

Thanks for all the comments, commenters. I'm going to avoid weighing in on the specifics of her policies; I don't think it would be appropriate for me to use this interview to then start a one-sided debate. Nonetheless, everyone else should go at it! I'll certainly participate in the larger debate.

One line that stuck out for me:

ideas with the power of history behind them

Policy debate aside, tell me that isn't a particularly conservative thing to say.

By the way, RD, no need to worry. A thoughtful comment is always sufficient thanks.

I doubt Elizabeth May will ever get a vote from a regular of this site.

I disagree RD - the vast majority of the commentators (if that is even indicative of our readership) on ThePolitic.com are NOT conservative.

That is why I believe ThePolitic.com is special - it's not simply a echo chamber where conservative ideologues and partisans slap each other on the back.

Plus, a quick scan of the comments on ThePolitic.com make it pretty clear that the authors on ThePolitic.com rarely agree on most topics.

extremely useful guide to how one could re-invent an economy in such a way that it both was more resilient and not as prone to bubbles that burst as the wildly speculative financial markets that got us into the current recession.

I always shudder when i hear politicians talk about "reinventing" the economy to meet a specific goal. They talk like it's an actual achievable goal, like they can somehow overcome the natural cycles of capitalism and remake it in some utopian scheme.

Otherwise, great interview, Jonathan. It certainly reinforces Ms May's rather far-left political tendencies and places her fairly far from the center of Canadian politics.

Also, I'm also puzzled at the Green's opposition to nuclear technology - which is one of the cleanest and most efficient forms of energy on earth.

Terrific interview, Jon. Thanks for helping to bring a bit more clarity to readers about Elizabeth May's views. Whether or not she manages to expand her voter base on this site -- the answer, I think, is no -- the important thing is that you have broadened our dialogue, deepened our understanding of the Green Party's policy prescriptions, and invited all of us to think about where we ourselves stand on the Green Party's bread-and-butter issues. Thank you.

I doubt Elizabeth May will ever get a vote from a regular of this site.

I like some of the ideas she supports but I just can't step back and see the Green vote as anything other than a 5-10% electoral syphon on other moderate parties. If she ran in her riding and won, no problem. However, her running a party nationally definitely takes more votes from the liberals than the conservatives.
