Shane, I did a quick scan of the article, and it appears they’re talking about a glut of grapes used in wine production. From what I saw, there was no mention of concord grapes or any other juice grapes.

Does grape juice even contain real grapes?

Not the good stuff – it’s just made of purple.

Even if there was a glut of juice grapes, that doesn’t mean that there is any extra capacity for manufacturing grape juice. The price of a product is not directly affected by the input costs. It may encourage more production in the medium-term, or even more competition in the long-term, but such short-term fluctuations won’t have much of an impact.

We saw the same situation during the mad cow scare. Cows were being sold to slaughterhouses (a.k.a. abattoirs) for rock-bottom prices, but the savings were not passed on to consumers.
