Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) – life and economic clutter

July 7, 2009 · By

Let me admit the following: I have not read the Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) encyclical in its entirety. It is too wordy and too bloody long. I just scanned through the thing. Unless the Catholic Church wants to fade into insignificance, these things should be a lot more brief.

Amid the clutter of socialist economic poetry, I found one gem:

How can we be surprised by the indifference shown towards situations of human degradation, when such indifference extends even to our attitude towards what is and is not human?

In my opinion, that question goes to the heart of modern moral discourse.

Anyway, I am disappointed by The Pontiff’s naive demand for a world political authority among men to bring about social order and charity. Who would want yield to such power?

Perhaps the pontiff was referring to the Catholic Church to assume that role?

Well naturally. The Pontiff and all of his predecessors have believed that they are the original natural governing order in this world. Remember when he pronounced that the Catholic Church was the only “True” church in the world?

Darn. I just noticed my typo in that last sentence. I meant to write: “Who would want to yield to such power?”

I certainly agree with you guys that the Catholic Church would see themselves as the one and only rightful organization to assume the role of a world political authority. You may even be able to get me to bend my anarchist ways in supporting them in such a venture!

I just do not think it would work. I doubt everybody else in the world would submit peacefully to them or whoever else tried to assume control of the world.

Got something to say? (Read the rules first)
