The Left On Free Thought: “Boo Your Opinion!!!”
April 20, 2009 · By Matthew Campbell
Not a few of us within the conservative movement take notice at the severe lack of civility from liberals when it comes to engaging in discourse. I’m not speaking here of the liberal tendency to confine one’s diction to George Carlin’s words one cannot speak on TV, or the condescending behaviour shown to opponents (admittedly something us conservatives have failed at too often ourselves!), but rather the panicked, violently angry reaction liberals are demonstrating more and more whenever someone violates their sacred rule of challenging their monopoly on ideas anytime, anywhere and under any circumstance.
Two most dangerous examples within the last week demonstrate how liberals have successfully co-oped separate fundamental pillars of our modern society, the idea of rights and the pursuit of scientific inquiry, to create a dogmatic approach to dealing with what are understandably controversial issues. First, Janeane Garofalo, completely ignoring the black attendance at last week’s Tea Party rallies, not only accuses all conservatives everywhere of being racists but also melts the entire political movement of millions continent-wide into a bunch of mental patients — something that is apparently a scientific fact (you know, along with global warming and evolution!). This is dangerous territory folks since what Garofalo implies, if followed to its natural conclusion, will lead to a rebirth of Fitter Families, eugenics and the glorious history bastardized, political science has yielded in previously in our era.
Not to be outdone though, the homosexuals who have in the past eight months given new meaning to the term “gaystapo” in California are once again attacking a poor individual, 2009 Miss America runner up and Miss California, Carrie Prejean, for publicly stating her views that marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman. Once again, here come America’s liberals to protect us from our own opinions.
Look, I know a lot of folks who agree with the homosexual agenda, or feel that conservatives hate Barack Obama because he’s black, or even think that we’re out to murder the Earth think that a two line response, or reference to a liberal magazine article should make us on the other side of the aisle drop our arguments and accept your enlightened reasoning, but let me put this to you: would you do the same if the situation was reversed? After all, part of the reason why many liberals are atheists today is because the only response they got to questions on God was “because the Bible says so”. Not that I don’t believe that this is true, but I also know that it is a far too over-simplistic answer to one who is going through a spiritual crisis. Furthermore, conservatives lost the culture war on tax policy because we weren’t willing to put forward detailed responses to the New Deal in the 1930s or Trudeaupia in the 1970s — only when Ronald Reagan came along, charm and all, did this trend start to reverse.
Bringing it all back, would any self-respecting liberals trust a Republican President who ran his entire campaign on “Yes we can!”, “HOPE” and (especially) “CHANGE”? Of course not, and while the view is sadly not universal, at least a good plurality of us conservatives can be counted on for not expecting liberals to give into such simplistic arguments or desire our opponents to fade away. Let’s be honest here: liberals respect and appreciate being given such dignity, right? So, why then would you not afford us the same dignity; dignity that our forefathers shed blood in two World Wars, and dozens of others over the past 200 years defending the right to? Is that too much to ask for?
