Lame Quebec sovereignists and Nicolas Sarkozy

March 31, 2009 · By

Le Pur Et Dur has a fine article in Le Bouc magazine about Nicolas Sarkozy’s most recent and repeated blessing of a united Canada.

En effet, ce qui compte dans le fond, c’est de démontrer sa loyauté indéfectible envers le Canada dans un contexte où des entreprises françaises tentent de soumissionner en Ontario pour la fabrication de réacteurs nucléaires. Business is business.

Alors qu’importe si cela peut faire plaisir à Paul Desmarais, il appartient aux leaders souverainistes d’assumer leur leadership dans ce genre de situation.

Sarkozy is only interested in a Canada that advances French business interests and the sovereignist leaders in Quebec fail to call him out on that.

Saving the environment or saving jobs? You can not have both

March 30, 2009 · By

Many socialists seem completely clueless. Saving the environment seems laudable but it comes at a cost. The clutter of G20 protests is peculiar. Look at these:

guardian.co.uk

guardian.co.uk

Telegraph.co.uk

Telegraph.co.uk

msnbc.msn.com

msnbc.msn.com

We are not going to see:
1) guarantee for jobs
and
2) saving the environment or fighting global warming or changing the climate or redistributing wealth
simultaneously.

Read this nonsense:

Our future depends on creating an economy based on fair distribution of wealth, decent jobs for all and a low carbon future.
There can be no going back to business as usual.

Our message is clear. We must put people first.

No, your message is not clear.

Demands for actions requires that costs be taken into account. The economic limitations of the demands can not be physically avoided. So, until a concrete proposal exists for “fair distribution of wealth, decent jobs for all and a low carbon future” none of these protests are clear. They may as well toss “peace, love, happiness, motherhood and apple pie” into the mix.

Alberta’s New Slogan: “Freedom To Create. Spirit To Achieve.”

March 27, 2009 · By

Check out the new promotional video for Alberta.

Alberta

It has it’s critics, say, here and here, but I like it.

“Freedom To Create. Spirit To Achieve” challenges a certain complacency whereby having the freedom to create wealth — not just material wealth, but the individual resource to fulfil one’s hopes and dreams — is diminished by overemphasizing our collective niceness as Canadians, specifically, the emphasis that gets placed on tolerance and equality, acceptance and understanding, or on our public welfare services as tenets of civil society. … And on that score, “Alberta Advantage” was always pretty blah, open to interpretation or any supposed advantage one might place on it; a wide swath of winners and losers.

There are people with ambition in this world, those who don’t whine when life — be it certain grievances against history or some amorphous and oppressive “ism” — deals them a rough hand, but keep going, looking for new opportunities for success despite hardship. These are the kinds of people we need to attract to Alberta, to encourage once they get here.

On the new slogan I say job well done.

Using Carbon Tariffs as a Weapon – Energy Secretary Steven Chu

March 26, 2009 · By

We will see just how much the world loves President Obama after he slaps carbon tariffs on foreign imports to “level the playing field” on greenhouse-gas-reduction [via SDA]:

Mr. Chu, speaking before a House science panel, said establishing a carbon tariff would help “level the playing field” if other countries haven’t imposed greenhouse-gas-reduction mandates similar to the one President Barack Obama plans to implement over the next couple of years. It is the first time the Obama administration has made public its view on the issue.

Government of Canada to Join Earth Hour Nonesense

March 26, 2009 · By

Is the Conservative government so concerned with keeping up with the global warming hype that they’re going to start to participate in every superficial green cause that grabs a few headlines?

The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, and the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment, are proud to support Earth Hour 2009 on March 28 by reducing lighting in federally owned office buildings to help raise awareness of climate change.

“The Government of Canada’s continued participation in Earth Hour is an indication of our commitment to being mindful consumers,” said Minister Paradis. “As the custodian of one of the largest office building portfolios in the country, Public Works and Government Services Canada is committed to incorporating environmental practices into waste management, water conservation and the efficient use of energy in our buildings.”

“Supporting Earth Hour is part of our commitment to help create a healthier environment for Canadians,” said Minister Prentice. “Simple actions such as turning off the lights can help improve our environment and tackle climate change as well as empower Canadiansto make important lifestyle changes that benefit their families and their environment. We encourage Canadians to take part in Earth Hour.”

US Congress Tackles the Big Issues – College Football Picks

March 26, 2009 · By

When not adding on billion dollar earmarks on trillion dollar bailout packages, the US Congress is busy tackling the issues that really matter to the average unemployed and overtaxed college football fan:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Everyone from President Barack Obama on down to fans has criticized how college football determines its top team. Now senators are getting off the sidelines to examine antitrust issues involving the Bowl Champion Series.

The current system “leaves nearly half of all the teams in college football at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to qualifying for the millions of dollars paid out every year,” the Senate Judiciary’s subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights said in a statement Wednesday announcing the hearings.

Earth Hour 2009 Shenanigans

And they call us morons?

My suggestion is that we advocate that people don’t stab themselves in the face for a whole hour! Imagine the conservative outrage! How dare we come up with something agreeable!? And of course, the ones who are truly idiotic will be hilarious entertainment as they stick all manner of pointy objects in their faces!
