Appealing to the Governor General to Stop the Coalition
December 2, 2008 · By Shane Edwards
Others have begun to write letters to the NDP, Liberal and Bloc leaders with regards to their ambitions to seize power. I am confident they are not going to listen to reason atthis stage.
I recommend you appeal directly to the Governor General. It is within her power to call a general election or ask the opposition to attempt to form government, at her discretion in the event of a vote of non-confidence. I have appealed to her directly, this is the text of my email.
To Her Excellency
the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D.
Governor General of Canada,As a citizen of Canada, I implore your excellency, in the event of a successful vote of non-confidence, to immediately call for a general election. The agreements between the three opposition parties with regards to a coalition are completely unacceptable to the Canadian people. To involve at any level of governance a party like the Bloc Quebecois, whose stated purpose is to advance the cause of the breakup of Canada is deplorable. The Canadian people must be allowed to voice their approval or non-approval of such a coalition in an election. If the NDP, Liberals and Bloc truly wish to govern democratically with the mandate of Canadians, they must run in an election on a transparent platform of working together in a coalition.
During the election of six weeks ago, both the NDP and the Liberal leaders made clear statements to the media and the public that they had no interest in working together as a coalition, and Canadians voted for or against them on that basis. Now, it has been made clear that this was a smokescreen and such a coalition had been in the works behind the scenes even as they lied to Canadians. They need to be elected to a true mandate, not assuming power by machinations for dubious reasons.
Your excellency, please do not permit them to usurp democracy by circumventing the election of only six weeks ago. I trust in your good judgement,
Her office’s email is info@gg.ca. You can get the postal address from the web, but a letter unless couriered or sent express will not get there in time. Don’t forget to attend one of the rallies this weekend. http://www.rallyforcanada.ca

Thank goodness the voice of reason has shown up. Thank you Shane.

There is a rally at the Toyota plant on Thurs. the 4th at 11:30.
Don’t sit back and take it people. Rise up and voice your opposition.
Do we really want the governor general making decisions? We just had an election a few weeks ago. Right on election night, a coalition could have been formed and the GG would not have been in a position to deny it. If you want the constitution ripped apart, and the GG position abolished, go ahead and have her interfere. This is a subject that divides the old PCs with the reformers though. Do we want to scrap the GG?
The economy is going down the toilet, and who-ever is in power will take the fall for it. I can’t believe the Conservatives want to manage this instead of waiting and blaming Dion…
Thank you Shane. Our outrage must be known and heard.

The only part of your post I heartily agree with RD is not wanting gg to make decisions for me or my country, given her Liberal roots and her separtist, commie husband’s. Truly frightening!
GG,
For once I have to agree with you. I do not want GG makign decisions for me neither!
Oh Charles! You are so funny! Please quit your day job (if writing for the Politic is your day job) and take up comedy! Tee hee!
I am GlacialGal. Hear me roar. I am no left-wing Gov Gen.
LOL!
Love ya’ Charles, you’re just on the wrong side most of the time.
The coalition is treacherous – verging on anarchy. “Traitors” also comes to mind in describing Dion and Layton. They are willing to sell out Canada for their pitiful egos.
I don’ think the GG has a mandate to be proactive here. Harper would have to ask the GG to act, that’s his sole prerogative as PM. In fact, the GG is meant to accept the advice of the PM as long as he has the confidence of the House, as measured by the litmus test of a confidence vote. Since the coalition has already expressed confidence in the government by passing the Throne Speech, and the government has not yet actually been defeated, the GG may well be obliged to accept Harper’s advice whether it is to prorogue or drop the writ.
But even if the GG does have discretion in this case, the burden of another election is still more democratic than Dion’s scheme to grab power.
Harper should ask the GG to drop the writ ASAP. A January election is the only way we will get this question answered in a way that is truly democratic.
I just don’t want the position of GG or the ‘queen’ and all that means period but she DOES have authority to be proactive if by that you mean responding to the leaders of parties that represent the majority of Parliament.
GG is meant to accept the advice by constitutional convention but the holder of the office has special personal authority to appoint or dismiss PM and dissolve Parliament (though King refused Byng doing just that)
his only option that can make this ‘go away’ is to dismiss her as the GG which he CAN do and I hope he does because that will display his hubris for EVERYONE even glacial gall to see and finally we can start to dismantle the ugly remnants of monarchy from this nation.
I have voted already we do have a prime minister quit waisting taxes payer’s money and for somebody that have already left is seat and back in the picture I don’t trust that little weasel.I was born in Quebec and left them in 1968 and I am proud to be in Alberta and show me any body from Quebec that as done a good job the only thing they have done is fill there owne pocket and don’t care to what happen to the rset of the world
Canada is a democracy. Canada has much corruption to repent of in all areas of power: justice, medicine, and politics. It begins with God’s people. “If my people who are called by my name,” the church has much to repent of. We are praying for Canada, for democracy in Canada. If Canada does not repent of being oppressive to their own people, then Canada will become oppressed.
We have just had an election and voted in the present Prime Minister Harper! Obviously the Canadians that took time to vote felt he was the right choice. Why should we have to have another election to prove once again that he is the Canadian people’s choice. This coalition includes the the Separatists (Quebec) who are being “bribed” to be a part of the coalition! Dion & Layton are only interested in having a POSITION; they are not interested in what the Canadian people want.
I believe that the push for Coalition should not be allowed. Reasons being:
1. We are not now currently in a Recession – maybe close.
2. Stimulus for industry and other areas should be given if and when needed, not randomly without any direction.
3. Taking away the Political Party funding and limiting other expenditures seems reasonable. Liberals, NDP @ the BLOC don’t. Point in Manitoba such funding to political parties has been stopped.
4. All Canadians just went through an Election and chose the Conservatives (Harper) to rule with a Minority Government. Call for another election although the time for action will be delayed.
5. Over the last term the Harper government have already taken action to prepare us for this financial problem. (THE REST OF THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD HAVE INDICATED THIS AND PRAISED CANADA – HARPER – FOR THE ACTIONS WE HAVE TAKEN)
POWER SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO ANY PARTY WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE – SHOULD IT??
Her Excellency, Governor General of Canada,
As a concerned citizen of Canada re: the attempted takeover by the 3 oppostions parties, of our newly elected parliament by the people of Canada authorizing Prime Minister Harper to be the leader in this parliament, has challenged. If permission is given to these 3 opposition leaders to take over the governing of this parliament it will destroy the privilege and freedoms given to us by our forefathers. This is nothing short of Communism and a total disregards for our freedoms that so many of our men and women in uniform willingly gave of their lives to protect & that we might enjoy these rights we now enjoy until this unprecedented day. It is a disgrace to democracy and total disregards to the voters of this country. I have never been so angry over anything until now. This is how places like Russia, Venezuella and countries under dictatorships are governed. May God help you and give you wisdom to do what is democratically and morally right for the people of Canada under you.
Sincerely Yours
Evelyn Ironside
Hey Evelyn,
While on the topic of far-fetched dictatorship rants, what do you call a ruling party that tries to pass legislation that would bankrupt all opposition parties?
The wingnuts are out! As for the praying couple, pray for wisdom and empathy towards people.
Darn rights, if the opposition parties are so lazy and entitled that they don’t think they have to actually solicit donations from their supporters, they deserve to be bankrupt. Keep in mind the CPC take the biggest hit in chopping that trough, to the tune of ten million big ones – more than any other party.
That ain’t dictatorship – that is promoting true democracy where if your ideas have merit, people will actually give you money instead of being forced to contribute by coercive taxes.
Please do not let the coalition go through. You deny our rights to vote if this happens.
Our country will be divided and no longer Canada as we know it.
The greed factor is very much at work here.
How can Mr.Haper and his party put forth a package for the economy when Mr.Obama is not fully at the helm. You and I both know the USA plays a big part with us as a big sister nation.
To blame the conservatives now is the most un-just thing I could ever hear as a Canadian in my 63 years born here.
The anger will only escalate and destroy our country if the coalition gains control. They cannot even find unity amongst themselves for goodness sakes.
Please ponder this most carefully.

No coalition. The Liberals and NDP are selling Canada to the Bloc. Perhaps an election will be less costly that letting the three parties going on a spending spree that will put future generations buried under debt.
If the bloc, liberals and ndp can’t work with one party, how will they every agree amost themselves?
Let’s have them show us their agreement and their plans before anything is done. So far it is all verbal bashing- nothing concrete.
Hey guys
I’m french canadian from Quebec and tonight, our prime minister, Stephen Harper, has not spoken to us as the rest of this country.
By now, this is still my country, and I believe in each of you even if I’m different ,different language, different origin, different interest. We are all in the same club.
From those lasts days ,three partys proofed to us that agreement and unity is possible in this country. In parlementery system, this is our way(through parties and deputies) to express our democraty.
Tonight, the man of the situation, M. Harper, has showed to canadians he is not mature enough to retract and recognize his mistakes.
The opportunity is now over.
It never ceases to amaze me at the stupidity of some people.I agree with Stephen Harper. There is absolutely no benifits to a coalition government.Basically it is a mutiny. To be honest they should be tried for treason. It is just another reason to distrust the government.Harper cannot be blamed for the economy, last i checked it was determined by the rest of the world with the stock market.Basically buying imported instead of domestic is what is really killing us her in Canada. We have an abundance of oil here in Canada, but China is willing to pay so much more for it so the price goes up and the oil goes to them, instead of putting Canada first. We are becoming less self sufficient by the second.A Coalition government will undoubtably create historical violence and ireparable damage to the government.Someone should have taken Stephen Dion to the border and kicked his ass over.
Governor General of Canada
I want to agree with Evelyn Ironside Dec. 3/08. What she says is what I would say but I have this to add.
Stephen Harper was voted in as Prime Minister of Canada. He is who the people want. He has much more education than the others in what is going to need doing with the country with the shape it is in. We can’t have a bunch of hot-heads taking over like Castro did many years ago in Cuba. These people do not have Canada’s best interests at heart. They are only thinking of themselves. If a coalition government takes over we will not have a democracy any more and there will be no need of ever voting again.
I am so ashamed of our Canadian people and more ashamed ot the people in parliament. They stand there and fight all the time getting huge salaries and the country is not being governed properly at all.
The Americans can teach us a lesson about standing behind their leader whether good or bad until his term is up.
The recent demonstration in Washington was heart warming and I would hope that we could put our petty differances in the closet and stand up for unity in parliament. United we stand, divided we fall. It is that simple.

Hi Lynne:
Just a quick correction. You said
“Stephen Harper was voted in as Prime Minister of Canada”.
Actually, he was voted in as a member of parliament. A plurality of MP’s elected by the biggest winner in the house then decided who would be the Prime Minister of Canada. We don’t vote for the position here.
Thanks.
