Liz May: The Ridiculously Serious Contender
August 30, 2008 · By Matthew Campbell
As an update to today’s news that the Green Party has, um, purchased its first MP in the House of Commons, the Star is now asking if May will be in the debate, and quotes Mother Nature as saying,
“If they decide not to allow me in the debates, what they’re really doing is telling voters `don’t take that party seriously.’ It’s inherently antidemocratic and the signal it sends to the voters is powerful…
Just for the record, this is the same Green Party whose August 29th edition of it’s official site includes an article titled: Harper as Canada’s Nero: Nero fiddled while Rome burned, Harper fiddles while the Arctic melts, while the leader herself got in trouble last year for comparing our Prime Minister to the infamous German National Socialist Chancellor Adolf Hitler. Is this the language that we expect from a serious national leader, or from someone who wants to represent all Canadians? In light of how extreme the Greens have been in attacking their opponents, maybe it’s not the best idea for Liz May to remind Canadians that she’s being serious!
Eloquent Update: From CTV on Wilson’s crossing:
May said the move shouldn’t be characterized as opportunistic, “however, it is a hell of an opportunity.”
We can only hope she’s sound as articulate during the debate, if she makes it!

Elizabeth May at the next leader’s debate? Not bloody likely!
The Left is already well represented by the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc, so there is no need to further bore the long suffering voters of Canada with another candidate for another Party that will NEVER form government.
Whether you are an environmentalist or not, there is no denying the Greens are a fringe Party, always will be, unless the current epidemic of political naivety reaches pandemic proportions, and there is nothing new another Left -wing Party can add to the debate. Suffering through the embarrassing Jack Layton, who will NEVER form government, and the charming, but regional Gilles Duceppe,is bloody enough!
Canada’s elections already resemble the famous Monty Python skit, let’s not make it any worse!
Her comments on CTV show why she should not be in the debates. She might first want to learn the rules of Parliament.
She said Harper never had to call the by-elections. Uh,yeah Lizzy, he did, because that is the law.
Then she stated that it’s ok her and Dion have agreed not to run candidates against each other, pointing out how the Liberal’s never ran one against Harper when he became leader of the party. Lizzy, what you are talking about is right, except it deals with by-elections when a leader is elected to a party that and does not have a seat in the house.
Let the shopping cart lady into the debates. Let her make a fool of herself.
“We can only hope she’s sound as articulate during the debate, if she makes it!”
It’s like you’re on a mission from God to make yourself look stupid.
First 3 comments are right on!
Matthew! “Mother Nature”? You’re killin’ me!
Love it! LMBO!
Lizzy should be at the debate…in the foyer prior the debate handing out programs and after said debate holding the door open for the departing audience.
Right now the Greens are considered by many to be a ‘protest vote’, and often for people who have even less of an idea what their platform is than they do of the other 4 major parties.
With so many people voting Green, Canada would be better off allowing Ms. May to participate, if for no other reason than to help to educate Canadians what they are voting for. This may result in either a gain or a loss for Ms. May, but more people will know what they are voting for. I can’t see this as a bad thing.
Also, I take issue with the idea that this debate is only for parties that may form government – if that’s the purpose of the debate, then why are Duceppe and Layton present? Parliament is not just about who forms the government.
