Hockey Night In Canada theme is a rip-off

June 9, 2008 · By Charles Anthony

Canceling the Hockey Night In Canada theme song is probably the best thing the CBC has ever done in a long time. The second best thing is offering a $100,000 prize for a replacement.

Get real people. The previous $500 per game contract was a colossal rip-off and never should have happened. The artist is just trying to milk the tax-payer further. With this contest, the CBC is telling how much they are willing to pay the artist of the current theme. No more and no less. Have no fear. I like to call this whole thing a game of poker or chicken. My guess is that we will get the old theme back. My bet is that the CBC is this artist’s biggest source of income.

I recommend that the owners of the current Hockey Night In Canada theme submit their old theme to this contest and take the prize money. Since the winner will be chosen by the listeners, I figure it would be a shoe-in. Anything the CBC offers is a cash cow.

I don’t know, Paul Anka used to make money every time the Tonight Show theme that he wrote aired.

This is not about the $500 per game, this is about the lawsuit & the CBC thinking they can get away with not compensating the composer for ringtones.

[...] for once I agree with The Politic, it probably is time to move on. I mean come on it’s not even been updated for a more [...]

Thanks for that Brendan. That makes sense. This is just a tit-for-tat at the expense of the tax-payer.

I did not know about the ringtone dispute. Now, that I do, I still think the CBC made the right decision.

Well, I guess everybody wins then, ’cause CTV just bought the rights to the song in perpetuity. They’ll use it for TSN broadcasts, of course, and for the Winter Olympics (which the CBC also let get away from them).

I am devastated to see such a cherished tradition go by the wayside. If they ever decide to replace Don Cherry I’m kicking someone’s ass but good.

holy this is one dumb ass site, ok 500 bucks each time its played, its played four times a month = 2000 bucks and its only played during the hockey season…you idiots, you can’t even live here in Vancouver for that…and why is it every time an artist makes money in this stupid ass country everyone freaks out…you ever see what those CEO’s at aircanada make or cbc, for the job they do they should be put in jail.

Got something to say? (Read the rules first)
