Sorry meant to say that there is little doubt that it happens. However, I don’t agree that all polygamous ‘marriages’ are abusing the welfare system. I just wanted to clear that up.

Safa, what do you see as the answer here regarding the victimization of Muslim women in Canada?

If you have an extra-marital affair and father a child out of wedlock, you may like find at least one person (probably two) who will defend your actions. The law of the state will not prohibit you from doing so.

An outsider may look at you as being a douche-bag but he may also reserve judgement and simply say that you created a polygamous family.

Morally, it makes no sense to single out polygamous Muslim men any more than singling out promiscuous non-Muslim men.

For what it is worth, the law of Ontario does not legalize polygamy among Muslims. The law just says that the first marriage is still valid no matter how many secondary women and children exist in or out of the same household — which is arguably the same as promiscuity.

When I recently read Khalad Housseini’s Land of a Thousand Suns, I found the culture portrayed to be deeply oppressive to women. Polygamy, in my opinion, is an integral component of that culture and the oppression. It’s my hope that Iman Aly Hindy is not granted a free hand to foster that kind of oppressive culture here in Canada. This is not a value of the Canada I am proud to be a citizen of.

ok kids, having more than one wife is against the law. muslims should be charged under that law and all wives returned to the country of orgin. no welfare, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars.

To me it’s the fact that these imam’s are flouting Canadian law. And the women who willingly enter into these marriages thinking that they have rights, find out that they are no more than a doormat……

I lived it for 2 years…..and it’s done in secret all over Canada….

Yup.

Makes me wonder about serial monogamists too. Dissatisfaction with one woman costs. Hollywood types can afford to sire children with a half dozen (or more) women. Sadly, all the people who subconciously model their lives after celebrities don’t think of the costs of that lifestyle.

The fact that a cleric endorses the promiscuity is irrelevant.
