That's the thing, Nick. If I didn't commute 30 minutes either way I would have held onto it. So I guess it's my fault for not sticking to the more rural areas where it is possible to go to work without fighting traffic, or at least being able to get there in less than 10 minutes.

Urban/subruban life pretty much necessitates the small car.

The one thing you should consider (as I did) is the safety a full size pick up offers for kids. I have a young family and actually turned in my Camry for a F350. Of course I live on the island where traffic is not such a issue. Anyway sad that a way of life is going by the way side. Of course the fact that the oil companies are making more money than can be printed is another issue entirely....

When we originally looked at trucks 2 years ago, the fuel economy ratings for the Dodge Dakota as compared to the Ram with the MDS 5.7 were actually comparable. So, in terms of gas savings that wouldn't do much.

SUV's really don't make a difference as far as that goes. If the downsize is not dramatic, the savings won't be significant enough to warrant a change.

Ideally, we'd keep the truck as the family runabout at home and I'd commute in a car, but the minivan right now is free and clear, so we're better off to keep that.

Have you considered a compromise, in the form of a midsize 2-wheel-drive truck like a Ford Ranger, a Chevy Colorado or a Toyota Tundra?
