Richard Warman Tells Canada’s Top Conservative Bloggers: “SILENCE!”
April 9, 2008 · By Shane Edwards
The rubber has met the road. The game is afoot. Richard Warman, a former employee of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, who has famously taken the inside knowledge of the workings of section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act to create himself a lucrative channel of cash, has taken his hurt feelings to the court system, serving the National Post, Kathy Shaidle, Kate McMillan, Ezra Levant and Free Dominion with a lawsuit for defamation.
What he is really saying to every single Canadian Conservative who writes anything on the internet is “Shut the hell up!” He wants us silent, so that he can go on extorting funds from libraries, students, and everyone who dares to think differently from his brand of political orthodoxy.
This lawsuit will be won, but the costs are being footed by the defendants in these early stages. Their fight is our fight. Their fight is for every conservative voice in Canada. I for one stand behind them 100%.
If you read this, stand up for freedom of speech. Pick one or all of the defendants, and give through their sites to their paypal, to support their defence. Not all of them have responded on the net, but here is Kathy’s post on the subject – a link to her paypal is at the bottom. Here is Ezra’s. Here is a post from Free Dominion.

Ok , so who is bankrolling Warman’s costs or is he taking time off from his job with DND to prosecute the actions himself … if so is his employer paying his wages while in court?
“What he is really saying to every single Canadian Conservative who writes anything on the internet is “Shut the hell up!â€
Actually, what I think he’s saying is: don’t write stuff that might be libelous.
Not quite the same thing.
No there Daltone Thinskin McSquinty.
He wants to have the power to shut people up without their right to fight back.
He is getting as good as he gives!
He just wants everyone else to pay for his crusade.
In fact, there has never been a more obvious reason to shut the commission down entirely (like BC did) than Warman’s own conduct.
Perhaps you need an assistant to see things clearer. Hopefully Dean Steacy’s will be looking for a new job soon.
Well, it’s certainly more heroic and exciting n your version, John. Unfortunately, all that’s happening is that someone who thinks he’s been libeled is filing suit.
I personally wish this hadn’t happened, as the thought of Kathy Shaidle playing martyr makes my gorge rise. But I guess the courts will decide, eh?
Yes Dalton..how dare those served bring to light that a CHRC insider used taxpayers dollars for partisan, vindictive purposes, whilst masquerading as a white supremist and stealing access to private individuals e-mail accounts..
How dare they!
Is the truth now libelous?

I haven’t read the details of the lawsuit, Kursk, so I’m not sure what statements about himself Warman is considering libelous.
If on a blog I raise the issue as you presented it, I doubt I’d be in for a libel suit.
I realize this will be debated at two levels during the weeks to come. There will be some interesting discussion of the particulars and merits of the case, the nature of libel, the challenge of balancing libel law with freedom of speech, and so on.
And then there will be a lot of yowling of the “Richard Warman is an evil whelp of Satan Yay Kate Death To Our Foes” variety.
I’ll follow the first with great interest.

Okay, I’ve read Warman’s statement of claim, graciously provided by Ezra Levant.
It seems to me (and I am NOT a lawyer) that the allegations attributed to the defendants are, in fact, defamatory, and could be libelous. Kursk, the irony implied by your comment above assumes that the defamatory statements by the defendants are, in fact true. The essence of the complaint appears to be that those statements are being asserted as true, but haven’t been proven (except, of course, in the Court of the Blogging Tories).
