While I would rarely use such an epithet, I can't claim to be guilt-free. Then again, I doubt there would be such an outcry if Tom had called people 'retards'. I feel similarly about any derogatory term for any group of people. I have no respect for those who use them. I hold those who use them accountable, and I have a particularly high standard for those in public office. That said, it's a flaw of modern politics to believe that people can never change their opinion; once they say something once, that must be their opinion for life.
