Tom Lukiwski: The One Who Cast The First Slur…

Should it be a surprise that of all the people I know, the ones who are *socially liberal* when it comes to issues of lifestyles and choices are the also the ones that are most willing to drop the phrase “fag” when it comes to describing someone in a derogatory manor? I blogged about this a couple of years ago, when the marriage bill that allowed sodomous relationships to be recognized as marriages was making its way through the Commons and the excuse that I got back from the other side was that at least, when it came time to be counted, such people were willing to stand with their homosexual colleagues and beat down any sort of limitations on the definition of a noun. It’s a weak excuse (like many, in my opinion, that come from the disciples of secularism) and reaks of hypocrisy.

It’s such do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do attitudes that have lead me to find no better term than hypocrite to describe the anything-goes advocates today, and the affair of Tom Lukiwski (Conservative, Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre) is proving to be no different. It doesn’t seem to matter to both the Bloc and the Liberals that the member actually stood up in public and apologized for his comments, said that he strongly believed that they were inappropriate and that an MP like himself had no place in making them, the opposition parties still want blood! I suppose that the Liberals, home to one Andrew Telegdi, one Judy Sgro and one John McCallum and the Bloc, spiritual embodiment of one Rene Levesque, one Jacques Parizeau, one Bernard Landry, and, most recently, one André Boisclair might also take this opportunity then to air out their own Landr…er, laundry? After all, no comment too ancient, no connection too distant should be immune should it, even when the member has a) made reasonable attempts at reconciliation and b) has demonstrated no example of acting upon the controversial sentiments?

If we boil this right down to its essence, I’d say that the hypocrisy among liberals is so great that I would be quite comfortable with any person that wants to punish Tom Lukiwski for his comments in going through with their intentions provided that they have never used the terms “fagot”, “retard”, “nigger”, or any of their derivatives in a derogatory way over the course of their life. The silence on that advert would be so deafening though that we probably would completely forget about why we’re even bothering to dig up bones from the past in the first place. And maybe that’s why liberals so willingly act like hypocrites in the first place!

  1. I’d like to add the word “cunt” and “bitch”. That’s another “misogynistic” word that progressives use against women who disagree with them.

  2. On the same tape, the prov leader of the Liberal party was called a ’slut’, not a peep out of the ‘progressives’.
Perhaps if Linda Haverstock had been a lesbian, she would have deserved liberals defending her.

  3. There isn’t one of these left wing idiots who can stand up and say they have never used a derogatory term against someone else, and if they did I have an old fashioned derogatory term for them which is “You are a bloody liar.”

  4. Conservatives hate gays. Get over it.

  5. And liberals hate addressing the argument…thanks for coming out, enjoy the veal!

  6. Your post made me think, Matthew, about how I think of the term ‘retard’, and for that I thank you. While I would rarely use such an epithet, I can’t claim to be guilt-free. Then again, I doubt there would be such an outcry if Tom had called people ‘retards’. I know I wouldn’t have thought much of it.

The other 2 on your list - I can honestly say I have never called people those names to the best of my memory. I feel similarly about any derogatory term for any group of people. I have no respect for those who use them. I hold those who use them accountable, and I have a particularly high standard for those in public office.

That said, it’s a flaw of modern politics to believe that people can never change their opinion; once they say something once, that must be their opinion for life. Those who dare change their mind are labelled ‘flip-floppers’.

I will give Mr. Lukiwski the benefit of the doubt given the age of the video. I hope for his sake he’s being honest about his change of heart.

Actions speak louder than words. So far, to my ear, Lukiwski’s apology sounds like he’s being contrite about having created his own political liability, not what he said or did.

Where are his actions to back up his claims? How has he voted in the House of Commons on matters involving GLBT issues? (Would be one example that comes to mind)

We should not lose sight of the fact that the video is not shot when he was in his twenties, but rather when he was near forty. At twenty, I can accept the “young and stupid” claim; at forty I have a bit more trouble with it.

  8. From what I gather, Lukiwski never used derogatory slurs. Despite this, he was clearly being derogatory, in my opinion.

Slurs have nothing to do with this event.

I confess that I have used slurs in the past and I still do.

Related specifically to this topic, if something is airy-fairy or effeminate, I will call it “gay” for short. For example, I find hyphenated last names to be very gay because they are confusing and they undermine a patriarchal tradition.

Last week, I joined a few friends to watch the World Wrestling Federation’s championship at a sports bar. A couple of my buddies are real big fans and it had been a long time since I actually watched a full match. I used to find it entertaining as a kid but grew out of it at around the same time that I grew out of video games.

Well, not much seemed to change in the world of professional wrestling, if you ask me. No matter how many bunny matches they have during the half-time show, the whole thing still seems very gay.
