You really are not getting it.
The righteous solution to your coyote “problem” is less laws and not more civil servants. Instead of asking for government to come to your aid, you should be demanding that your government increases your freedom.
There are enough free-loaders in this world as it is. We certainly do not need to be advocating socialism on their behalf.
[Just out of curiosity, are you part of that red tory camp infecting the Alberta government?]
Since you asked, cops on your yard after a break-in are certainly a waste of my taxes. They represent tax-payers subsidizing:
- you
- your failure to secure your own property, and
- your insurance company.
The cops are just putting an official stamp on an incident report. Your insurance company should be sending their own personnel to do that instead.
You can not possibly think that the cops treat all break-ins throughout your city with the exact same attention, do you?
I am sure there are tons of people where you live that call the cops and the cops never show up. I am sure there are tons of neighborhoods that do not even get cops on patrol.

Illegal, again. Leg hold traps have been banned for years, haven’t they? And otherwise a trap that could get a coyote would get my neighbour’s pets.

I do like the “stop asking for more government” line though. Kind of like kicking the cops off your yard after a break -in, shouting, “We don’t need any more guv’mint!”

Why don’t I shoot them myself? Maybe because of draconian rules against gun ownership and the discharge of firearms within city limits? I’d love to waste few of them myself, but I am not allowed, so I have to leave it to the authorities. Hence, I demand that the authorities do their jobs.

As for your silly anecdote about human encroachment on the territory of wild animals, get a grip. I am not talking about spotted owls or eagles. I am talking about a predator that was never a native of this part of the continent, who has moved in as a nuisance, thriving on human largesse - garbage, pets, etc. They need to be controlled, just like rats, raccoons, etc.

Humans are encroaching on the territory of wild animals.

Around certain towns — Ottawa, for instance (maybe C.M. up above could attest to that too) — people set up sheep, emu, deer, etc. farms and are surprised that they get coyotes! Hello?!?! Please do not ask the tax-payer to bail you out!

In Manitoba, we pronounced it “Ky-yoot”, and shot them if they became a nuisance.

The reason the city officials are afraid to just shoot them, is so many citizens are programmed to become hysterical at the mere mention of guns.

Add that to the Disney Effect, and there isn’t much that can be done. Chucking rocks at them probably works as good as anything, in the non-lethal vein, but if a child was ever struck by a stray rock, the thrower would get his 15 minutes of fame.

We had this problem in the Ottawa area, the City spent a lot of money and took care of some 22 of them in a populated area. Yup a few fluffy’s bought the biscuit too.

Scores of people were outraged that the city used tax dollars for the “Genocide” of such a noble species. City folk.
