The Golden Compass: Film-Going For the Retarded

December 9, 2007 · By

It is a rare thing to find a movie that unites both critics (43% on the tomatometer) and movie-goers. A particularly perceptive example of the former:

The newest entry in the “what the fuck” hall of fame is Chris Weitz’s deplorable, dull, nonsensical, unwatchable The Golden Compass, which comes packed to the gills with meaningless terms, arcane concepts, stupid names, and a narrative patchwork that plays like a game of “make-up” improvised by a hyperactive child…The worst crime of a film like The Golden Compass is that not only is it retarded, it expects its audience to be retarded as well.

This, in a world where “Left Behind” doesn’t garner a red-carpet extravaganza. Is there no justice!?

Man, I have a hankering for a banana – Their design lends themselves to my hand perfectly!

BTW, I’m getting you the book for Xmas.

Given the fact that this movie causes the wacko’s to blow a gasket I’m going to have to take reviews with a grain of salt.

Sometimes film makers are not good at bringing a book to the silver screen. This, however, does not mean that the book is bad; it just means that the film isn’t good.

I find it ironic that it isn’t until a film is produced that people start calling for a ban on the book; especially since it sat on Catholilc School library shelves for almost 10 years before parents even started to take note.

I hope that every young person in this country reads this book and makes up their own mind about it. After all, not everyone who has read Mein Kampf turned into a fascist; in fact, it did quite the opposite for me.

Got something to say? (Read the rules first)
