Political Fatigue over the State of the Media in Canada
August 28, 2007 · By Shane Edwards
Whew.
The summer’s almost over, and man am I getting fatigued politically.
I scan through National Newswatch, and all I see is “Harper no good, Harper mired in medicority, Harper in trouble, Afghanistan, Newfoundland, Opinion Polls”. What is it about the media that none of these things ever get turned around? I don’t expect the media to quit being negative, but why aren’t they asking the same questions of the Liberals, etc? Why isn’t the media asking, “If Harper is so mediocre, how come Dion has not made any headway whatsoever?” Why isn’t the media asking, “Why doesn’t the negative rantings of Dion and Layton over Afghanistan result in any gains in the opinion polls? Is this issue resonating with voters or not?”
It is just getting fatiguing, looking for a semblance of a conversation, and finding nothing. What happened to seriously discussing issues? Are we more polarized than ever before, or was political discourse always this way?

“It is just getting fatiguing, looking for a semblance of a conversation, and finding nothing.”
I know how you feel. Why the heck do I keep coming back here?
Ha - keep coming back! The summer is always a low time for posting, and with winter quickly approaching, posting levels will pick up…
Perhaps in those new postings (and potentially new writers) you’ll find something worthy of your attention ;)
So ? What is new ? The lib-left media is attempting to create the news by imposing their liberal views. Even CFRB talk radio (which I hate , but my wife listens) … John Moore continually rants about Bush and conservatives while never dumping on Dion or the liberals.
I have almost totally “tuned out” the MSM , and I expect the MSM in the long run is heading for trouble as more viewers become disgusted with the shoddy and biased MSM.
Thought you would like to know:
Garth Turner is to come to Kelowna.
A POLL asking if you plan to attend Garth Turner’s open house;
YES 45
NO 871
\That says it all!!!
Indeed … the MSM is relentless.
They’re not interested in anything but the attention grabbing headline.
Except for the fact that the overwhelming majority of their members feel entitled to push their own POV without regard for dissenting opinion this would be irrelevant.
Until a serious mainstream venue for political news analysis with an honest editorial standard becomes available the MSM will become increasingly irrelevant.
Do I see a market opportunity here?

Try The National Post…….Not perfect but by far the best MS news source available in the land.
Death to the G&M!…Death to the TO (”red”) Star!
“Spring Election”
“Summer Election”
“Taliban Spring Offensive”
Remember these wonderful predictions? Ah, the MSM and its wonderful predicting skills!
How can you tell a “journalist” is not worth reading - his/her article starts with “CRITICS SAY ….” - obviously this person doesn’t have the technical skill to understand a situation, analyse it, and provide the reader with a summary of the item. Lazy, mind-numbing and totally without value to the reader - I wonder why any decent editor would permit it.
The MSM is funny…pathetic but humorous
It’s funny when this happens, but over in the progressive blogosphere, everyone’s complaining today about how the MSM (The G&M specifically) are spinning a recent poll showing a 33-33 TIE between the Libs and Cons as a big victory for Harper and the Tories (just one example.
Anyway, I just love it when both the left and the right are complaining about the bias of the media in favour of their opponents on the same day!
Thanks for that, LKO. That marks the first occasion I have seen positively spin a poll to the Conservatives in … oh… 15 years.
Good to know that hell has just frozen over. And that liberals are diligently digging into every media outlet to decry the slightest positive spin to the Conservatives. I mean, seriously. I can name 12 stories out of the MSM in the last 24 hours negative towards the CPC. How is this one story justification for any lefties to whine about biased media?
Oh here we go again - the constant victims, the conservatives.
Ah, boo hoo, they’re always picking on us.
Considering there are only two Liberal papers - The Star, and half
the Globe and Mail in ALL of Canada - hardly liberal bias in this
country.
Need a kleenex??
Shaun, is there enough oxygen up there, you know, where your head is currently situated, so far up your ass…?
I don’t mean that as a bad thing..it’s just where have you been man?
To make a statement that the Canadian MSM is not liberal biased shows an astounding lack of awareness on reporting of political issues in Canada over the last 45 + years..
Totally agree on the head up a** thing kursk.
As for Dion’s numbers….wasn’t Harper supposedly at 36% and Dion at 29-31% last spring?
In my opinion nothing will ever compare to the negative/biased witch hunt the press unleashed on Goodale during the last election campaign that turned out to be totally bogus and threw the election to the Cons. Hardly media bias in favour of the left. In the end its all about who’s actually got the power. It’s Harper’s to screw up and he’s doing a fine job so far.
You’re dreamin on the press bias. Harper has done nothing on the environment at all and he has tried to scuttle Kyoto. He deserves the minuscule amount of criticism he gets. Likewise on the bold faced lies on income trust.
The other thing I’ll mention is that BOTH of Canada’s national newspapers publicly endorsed the Conservatives in the last election.
Damned lefty MSM shills!

Wow, this certainly makes up for all the stuff happening in the last few years!
