E3 2007: Nintendo Press Conference Recap
July 11, 2007 · By Matthew
The big news to come today at Nintendo’s press conference is the announcement of Mario Kart Wii (tentative title), which will both play online and come packaged with a custom Wii steering wheel. Double Dash’s two-member karts are gone but a new online battle mode. Official word: “This is not your father’s Mario Kart.”
A new Wii Zapper will be released later this year, and will apparently have a broad amount of games supporting the peripheral which will be announced later this week.
Smash Brothers Brawl will be released on December 3, 2007. No word yet on Captain Falcon’s confirmed presence.
Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime claims the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is the “best Zelda ever”…riots to ensue in Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Beijing and Sydney, among other world cities. Greenpeace has also since released a condemnation.
Super Mario Galaxy will be out on November 12, 2007. Another new game, Wii Fit will be coming out later this year. It’s peripheral? It looks like a scale, but they’re calling it the “Wii Balance Board”. Wii Fit actually keeps track of your body mass index (BMI).

MARIO KART WII - I’ve been waiting for this one… ;-) WOO HOO!
Mario Kart Wii was always a must buy, but with on-line racing it’s even more enticing.
WiiFit looks cool; my wife already wants to buy it.
A lot of hardcore gamers are going “meh” for the Nintendo conference (despite Super Mario Galaxy, Phantom Hourglass and Super Smash Brothers), but Nintendo is playing a different game. I can see many a Wii Sports player picking up WiiFit.
Now if only Nintendo would announce at E3 that the Wii would be in more supply instead of subjecting would-be buyers to a painful game of going to many stores to find the console in stock. I think that would be far more helpful for the video game buyer than any future games.
