We have legal restrictions on driving speed because of the dangers incumbent from driving too fast. Justifying why we need such legal restrictions is a moral argument.

Encouraging drivers to exercise their conscience and follow the law, the legislated speed limit, is to appeal to their sense of right and wrong. This commercial doesn’t really do that as much as shame young men with an obviously false implication. The commercial is about as funny as a David Suzuki beer, hockey and light bulbs commercial; making the man-haters of the world laugh but few else.

The ad is Australian, as reported by the BBC. To think this ad will work assumes young men are stupid enough to believe people actually draw such a connection. While not making much of a point, they’ve depicted young men as senseless hooligans, caring little for any virtue of character. Guys may or may not talk about the ad, but so what? I doubt it will have any effect because it’s not giving young male drivers any actual reason why speeding is morally objectionable; just some stupid bit of marketing that says guys who speed are compensating because they are physically deficient, as far as being male goes.

Actually, the corollary is that a woman is a little too big down below… you know, that guys have to tie a board over their ass to stop from falling in, can’t touch the sides, help me find my car keys and we can drive out kinda big!
