Bronco Goes Ballistic On Morton

June 14, 2007 · By George Freeman

This is good for a laugh.  That Bronco, always good for a publicity stunt; except, of course, the one’s he does not intend that involve his mother and Craig Chandler.

Anyhooo, this one starts with a speech Morton gives saying Calgary is not a “great” city without its surrounding areas:

Mayor Dave Bronconnier is seeing red after a provincial cabinet minister yesterday told regional municipal leaders that Calgary isn’t “a great city.”

The miffed mayor took umbrage to remarks by Sustainable Resources Development Minister Ted Morton, who told representatives at the Calgary Regional Partnership’s spring general assembly in Banff it’s the rural areas surrounding Calgary that make it great.

Bronconnier said the speech was more proof that Calgary’s issues are an afterthought for provincial leaders.

“I think it’s ironic from a rural MLA living in Calgary to tell an audience that Calgary is not a great city — of course I take offence to that,” he said.

“It was absolutely uncalled for — they’re trying to divide and conquer.”

Following the speech, Bronconnier confronted Morton and “gave him a piece of my mind.”

Explaining his encounter with Calgary’s towering drama queen:

Morton, the MLA for Foothills-Rocky View west of Calgary who lives in Varsity, said the mayor over-reacted to the remarks, going “ballistic” for no good reason.

“Dave is so self-absorbed and thin-skinned that he’s capable of misinterpreting things and taking them out of context,” he said.

“I think what you’re seeing is a deteriorating relationship between Dave Bronconnier and every other official that tries to work with him.”

According to speaking notes supplied by Morton, the former Tory leadership candidate linked Calgary’s success to its surrounding natural amenities and rural municipalities, but said the region similarly benefits from the city.

“Calgary by itself is a good but not a great city,” he told delegates.

“What makes Calgary a great city — the best in Canada as far as I am concerned — is what surrounds it.”

Morton said the mayor was likely put off by a portion of the speech suggesting competition between the city and Municipal District of Rocky View, notably in a bid to provide water to a massive commercial development near Balzac, could have been handled better.

Licia Corbella says Bronco might have been able to take up a good issue from what Morton actually said, if he was not, as Morton says and Corbella agrees, so thin skinned.

Yadda yadda. Dave is priming himself for a run for the provincial Liberal leadership.

Good point. Notice his back turn on Calgary’s symbiosis with rural areas.

In the name of preserving intellectual property you should credit the source that you are quoting don’t you think. I’m sure that the newspaper or TV station could afford a lawsuit…you might not

I am very dissapointed. I used to live in Rocky View, Balzac even to be specific and I am so sad to hear that my beautiful land is bring torn down for more commerical stuff. Soon I bet I wont be able to see my mountains anymore.

Why do the Tories hate Calgary? The ciy has been good to them for so long and now the Tories refuse to fund infrastructure improvements, hospitals etc.

Let’s face it the Tories have buggered the lectoral system to give the 1/3 of the population that lives in Rural Alerta 50% of the seats. The Toreis are screwing the major cities and trying to hold onto that rural seat base.

    Sad.

Hilarious. Michael Spears knows what a lawsuit is but isn’t quite sure about those blue texty things called “hyperlinks”.

Apparently Bronconnier only views southern Alberta as land to be annexed into our excellent city. Hopefully there are more upsets to follow in the upcoming munipical election.

I agree that Bunko Dave is primping himself up for a run at the Liberal leadership, federal or provincial I’m not sure. He knew perfectly well that his idiotic ranting was unfounded, but when you’re a Liberal on the campaign trial any fight will do, whether it’s reasonable or not doesn’t matter, only that he can shake his fist in anger and posture for the cameras.

Alberta bob, what is that ugly multi-coloured monstrosity out by the U of C? Oh yeah, our NEW Children’s Hospital. What are those cranes just north of Sunridge building? Oh yeah, the expansion to the Peter Lougheed HOSPITAL. Just because the government dowsn’t buy Bunko everything on his wish list doesn’t mean that we are being ignored, mostly it means that Bronconnier is being unreasonable in his incessant demands.

Our mayor apparantly feels that the squeeky wheel gets the grease. Personally, I think that the whining wanker should get replaced.

Self-absorbed is right! Looks like Bronconnier was set up just so that Ted could say that Bronco is a self-absorbed drama queen. I like it.
