Bono: The Question for Our Time

June 9, 2007 · By

Chuck Klosterman asks a question for our time:

Is Bono for real, or is Bono full of shit?

After yesterday’s little display, it appears that the answer has become obvious. Ironically, it’s someone on the left whose analysis of the day’s events has the most face validity:

If Harper had just met with Bono, does anyone really think he would have lambasted him, as he did today??

The man has a point. The day before, Harper refused to meet with Bono. Horrors! Even Bush had a little shake ‘n smile with the guy. Then the next day, Harper, alone amongst all the G8 leaders, is singled out for special criticism. By name. Him alone.

Now, I’m not saying that a pampered celebrity, Paris Hilton with a Celtic accent, shouldn’t be jaded by such rough treatment. But it does put the attack in context.

Here, by the way, is a rarely-stated sliver of common sense. Anything that Canadians contribute to African development or whatever is a product of sheer, unadulterated altrusim. We don’t owe Africa anything. Anything we give is a product of our generosity, and we give a hell of alot more than many other countries that, strangely enough, escpaed Bono’s criticism yesterday. For a celebrity to slime Canada in the face of our generosity is very disheartening.

I think Bono and Geldhof, two absolutely wealthy men, should consider giving more of their money away, instead of encouraging govts to give more of mine.

Excuse me if I’m wrong….wasn’t Bozo in the news several months ago regarding moving the buisness end of his music out of country to avoid paying taxes? Mr “Redistribute the Wealth” is more than willing to agrue that the taxpayers of the West should give their hard earned money to the poor, yet he is doing his best to avoid adding to the pot of taxpayer money. Seems to me he is all about us helping the poor with our money, just not his.

I don’t really understand the conservative hate-on for people that devote their time and energy to helping others.

I really don’t understand people, who devote their time and energy helping others, with other people’s money, attacking those who write the cheque.

Perhaps Bono should read the Senate report on aid to Africa.

Health Minister Tony Clement cut a ribbon to open an ultra-modern, $4 million infectious disease laboratory in Nairobi on Friday, almost all of which was paid for by the Canadian government…
It’s a big world, with lots in need.
