Paris Goes Back to Jail – Does Bono Blame Canada for that too?
June 8, 2007 · By George Freeman

The day after everyone thought Paris got a slap on the wrist, sista Arlene stands fast in solidarity … “prayin’4″ her.
If it was solidarity that U2′s Bono was after at this years G8, he didn’t get it from Stephen Harper, for whom meeting celebrities isn’t his shtick.
While Paris was crying to high heaven over being sent back to jail, Bono now wails after being spurned by Harper and not getting the package he wants for Africa:
“It’s as if we have the place bugged, because everybody tells us … We know who’s causing the trouble and who isn’t. And we know that Canada blocked progress. We know that Harper blocked it.”
What’s Bono really upset about?
Apparently Bono thinks rich countries should give money to “African relief” with or without standards of accountability and good governance.
The prime minister fired back.
“We did not block an agreement. There’s no reason we would block an agreement,” Harper said.
“We happen to believe that when it comes to aid money that the full framework of accountability is very important.”
“Canada favours transparency.”
Harper hailed the G8 agreement for also declaring that the bulk of countries receiving aid should meet the standards of good governance, accountability and democracy.
Does Bono think enabling African despots is helpful for African relief? that unaccounted monies and poor standards of governance will do much of anything for poverty in Africa?
Good to know that Harper has taken the principled approach, standing fast against wasting Canadian resource on misguided celebrity fantasma. No doubt other G8 leaders, except maybe Blair who soon leaves office, were not too keen to waste precious budgetary resouce either.
That said, there’s something to be said for paying lip service. Way to go Arlene! Paris really needs your support right now!
One wonders, does Bono like insincerity too? Afterall, he did get solidarity from the leaders of the United States, Germany, France and Britain; and so far he’s praised Tony Blair and not criticized any other leader individually.

I have an interesting link for you which says aid to Africa does far more harm than good.
I’m here cheering for Harper for refusing to pander to another whiney celebrity.
Harper refused to meet Bono the day before. The next day, Harper is singled out for special criticism from Bono? Coincidence or superficial jaded celebrity?
