Top Chretien aide admits Liberals had no intention of reaching Kyoto goals

Goldenberg: What? You thought we were actually serious about those Kyoto targets? Really?
The previous Liberal government ratified the Kyoto Protocol knowing Canada wasn’t ready to take the tough measures needed to address climate change and would likely miss the deadlines for reducing emissions, says a top adviser to former prime minister Jean Chrétien.
God, I hope there was video of this speech.

If only CTV and the Globe picked up this story: they gushed all over Pablo and his bill, which is clearly nonsense in light of these revelations.
Apparently no one let Stephane in on the joke.
I got a different idea
Mo Strong told Chretien (his / PD’s sap) that he will sign the Kyoto deal. Explains how there are better things down the road. Result.JJC gets million buck plus deal with foreign petro co.
Which makes more sense?
Always follow the money.
Excellent find. Kyoto is again just a flavour of the day.
I am glad you linked to the article, because I think you misrepresent it. The article shows that the Liberals did what they thought was necessary to change public opinion on the environment. Put back into context, his comment really makes sense.
Why is it that no-one seems to be able to distinguish between Kyoto obligations, and Kyoto targets? Kyoto established targets for greenhouse gas emissions cuts, and also established the ‘penalty’ for not meeting these targets.
If a nation doesn’t meet a target, under Kyoto it must purchase carbon-credits from other nations that have extra credits to spare. This money is to be spent on further development of green technology.
Canada was never going to be able to meet its short-term Kyoto targets, given the development of the oil sands. This is no reason to not meet our Kyoto obligations. All this nonsense I’m hearing from CPC about restricting people to ‘driving their cars one day a week’ is nothing more than baseless fearmongering.
