Judiciary Valentine - No More Bleeding Hearts
February 15, 2007 · By Kelly T Konechny
Today in question peiod the Prime Minister was asked about the recent purposed changes to the selection of judges in Canada. The Tories have purposed that one chair be removed and replaced with a representation from law enforcement officials in the selecting of judges.
With the large pool of Liberal judges this country currently has on hand, the idea would be to balance by reflecting an opinion from those who enforce the laws of the land. The opposition was (obviously) opposed to this, adding that the government is “lowering the bar” in the selection of judges in this country with the addition of the police viewpoint. Talk to any law enforcement officer and you will hear endless frustrations about lock ups and let gos that are everyday events with some of the current judges out there today.
Ignatieff added, “How can Canadians have faith that our judicial system will be fair and impartial when our selection process is now about politics and no longer about the interests of justice?” Giving Iggy the benefit of the doubt, he wasn’t around when fair and impartial was determined by the thickness of the brown paper envelope being handed to the judge to be by the long arm of the Liberal party.
I find it curious that the media that ran this story (CBC, CTV) commented more on the fact that it was ’shocking’ and ’surprising’ that the PM speak his true intentions in the situation.
Is this the scary part about Stephen Harper that I missed during the last election campaign? Is it that frightening that the leader of a nation speak to the directions of his actions? He remains within his full right to do so.
