France to US - Sign Kyoto or We’ll Tax Your Oil Exports

February 3, 2007 · By Greg Farries

France is talking tough on Kyoto and threatening America with a carbon tax,

But he warned that if the United States did not sign the agreements, a carbon tax across Europe on imports from nations that have not signed the Kyoto treaty could be imposed to try to force compliance. The European Union is the largest export market for American goods.

“A carbon tax is inevitable,” Mr. Chirac said. “If it is European, and I believe it will be European, then it will all the same have a certain influence because it means that all the countries that do not accept the minimum obligations will be obliged to pay.”

No word on the whether the tax would contravene international law, or what the American reaction would be to such a tax. We can assume the American government would not take kindly to the EU (or France for that matter) profiting directly from a tax levied on US oil exports.

Anti-Strib thinks France’s suggestion could start a trade war.

That’s a laugh. Little France that cowers everytime it has had to fight, flexing its muscle at one of the countries that saved its ass in WW2. How amusing!

France stands to lose alot more in a trade war against the United States then the United States does with France.
