Investment Climate Better in the Western Canada
January 25, 2007 · By Greg Farries
The Fraser Institute has recently released a report that attempts to measure the overall investment climate for each of the provinces in Canada,
VANCOUVER, Jan. 25 /CNW/ - Ontario and Quebec, Canada’s most populous provinces, have fallen behind western Canada when it comes to creating and maintaining a positive investment climate,
[...]
Alberta earned the highest score, 8.9 out of 10, and was clearly Canada’s top province for policies that encourage and sustain a positive investment climate. BC followed in second position but some distance behind with a score of 6.0 out of 10. Saskatchewan is third with a score of 5.3 out of 10. The three western provinces were the only ones with an overall score above 5.0.
Ontario was fourth overall with a score of 5.0 while Quebec, with a score of 3.0, was ninth.
Perhaps this evidence will counter some of the false statements that Alberta’s economy is driven solely on the price of oil.
And you’re wondering why James Moore was smiling after the Liberal Leadership Convention?

Dion on Tuesday:
We must have done something right because Mr. Harper is now frantically trying to imitate us.
Bob Rae on Wednesday:
…the party’s election-campaign book will not be a shopping list, but focused on a few themes — as the Grits borrow from Stephen Harper’s campaign tactics.
Homosexual Parenting - Well, if “science” says so…..
January 25, 2007 · By Aaron Unruh
Given the current body of research, the American College of Pediatricians believes it is inappropriate, potentially hazardous to children, and dangerously irresponsible to change the age-old prohibition on homosexual parenting, whether by adoption, foster care, or by reproductive manipulation. This position is rooted in the best available science.”
Science can be so mean sometimes.
Is bin Laden an Environmentalist? Global Warming Causes Terrorism
January 25, 2007 · By Greg Farries
Yup, global warming does more than melt ice caps, it fuels terrorism. United Kingdom chief scientist John Mitchell attempts to make the connection at a London conference on climate change - quoting Osama bin Laden:
John Mitchell, chief scientist at Britain’s Met Office, noted al Qaeda had already listed environmental damage among its litany of grievances against the United States.
“You have destroyed nature with your industrial waste and gases more than any other nation in history. Despite this, you refuse to sign the Kyoto agreement so that you can secure the profit of your greedy companies and industries,” al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden wrote in a 2002 “letter to the American people.” [h/t: Little Green Footballs]
Earth to Wilkins
January 24, 2007 · By Aaron Unruh
Sometimes it seems as though David Wilkins is not a particularly bright person. The US certainly has the right to determine who can and who can’t cross its borders. But for Wilkins to publicly rebuke Canada’s Public Security Minister for defending the innocence of Maher Arar, especially after Arar’s ordeal in Syria and his subsequent vindication, is madness.
The guilty parties in the Arar affair are Canadians: the American authorities deported Arar to Syria on the basis of intentionally false information provided to them by RCMP officials (none of whom, this being Canada, have been held accountable for their actions). Still, it’s hard to not sympathize with this sort of reaction to Wilkins’ outburst:
My tourist dollars will stay out of the US economy until Maher Arar is taken off the United States of America’s “security watch list”, and until Arar receives an apology for being deported to Syria.
Garth Turner as a Liberal - Maybe, Maybe Not
January 24, 2007 · By Greg Farries
Yesterday I pointed out that there was a rumour Garth was becoming a Liberal - I thought Garth was becoming a Green? Anyways, Jeff from Halton decided he couldn’t wait any longer and needed to hear it from the horse’s mouth,
I saw on another Blog today that claimed you are in discussion to join the liberals and get the nomination nod without competition
Is there any cedibility to this weird story? I don’t see you as part of the red menace!!!
To which Garth responded,
I’m apparently always a menace - and I’ve heard ‘verified rumours’ like this one about me running as an indepdendent, a Green and a Liberal! I’ve set myself a deadline to have all this sorted out by the end of February. I said I’d take some months and talk to my constituents, and that’s exactly what’s happening. There’s only one question I need to answer - how can I be the most effective MP for the people of Halton? Everything else is irrelevant. ‘ Garth

Stuff you’d never see Paul Martin willingly get into…
Quick! To the Dithersmobile!
January 24, 2007 · By Shane Edwards
A picture I want to leave my mind: Adam West as Paul Martin, and Burt Ward as Stephane Dion. It’s not so much the analogy as the idea of seeing those men in tights. Ugh.
Mr. Dion seems to be doing an awfully good impression of a protege of late.
After elected as leader, Mr. Dion said the Liberals won’t support the 2007 Budget.
Then, the other day, he said they would.
Now, today again, he says “We won’t.”
Whee! Another ride in the Dithersmobile!
Enlisting The Liberal Infrastructure to Defeat Senate Reform
January 24, 2007 · By Shane Edwards
The Federal Liberals don’t want to stand up against Harper’s proposal to begin electing senators. They don’t want to get painted with an anti-democratic brush.
So they call in provincial Libs to fight it.
Are they really serious? Fight against Senate Reform in the Supreme Court?
Wake up, Canada, and see this for what it is: fat cat bureaucrats fighting tooth and nail to retain their grip on undemocratic power. Remember this during the next provincial and federal elections.
I wonder really how instrumental the Senate has been in Canada’s long progression into liberalism has been. I mean, think about it. The Liberals have been in power in the House of Commons more often than not since confederation. Because senators are appointed, this means that they have held a majority in the Senate in perpetuity. This is the FIRST challenge to that majority EVER. Losing it means losing a check on Conservative power that they have never been without, and losing a rubber stamp they have had on every “progressive” move they make while in power.
I’m not surprised they are fighting tooth and nail. I think there is a lot more at stake than the Liberals would like Canadians to know.
