Tolerance and understanding, CBC-style

The media frenzy surrounding CBC’s Little Mosque On The Prairie– the “quintessentially Canadian show” about a small Muslim community and the “inevitable misunderstandings that ensue when they interact with the locals in rural Saskatchewan” – continues on-line today.

The show’s creator, Zarqa Nawaz, apparently has “aspirations” for Little Mosque “beyond people’s living rooms”.

“Through comedy, she hopes, viewers will open up to its underlying message of tolerance and understanding.”

Ahhh, kind of like this example of ‘tolerance’ and ‘understanding’ from the show’s website:

“Fred Tupper, a local in his forties, is the town of Mercy’s own Rush Limbaugh. Fred uses his daily radio talk show, ‘Wake-up People,’ to fuel people’s suspicions about the growing Muslim community. If accused of intolerance, Fred would claim he only says things people don’t like to hear. No one would disagree with that! Fred describes himself a textbook libertarian: like most bigots. ”

What was that quote again? “Through comedy, she hopes, viewers will open up to its underlying message of tolerance and understanding.”

Riiight.

    Actually,it was slightly less bigotted towards western Canadians than I expected it would be.I have to admit I chuckled a couple of times,however the humor seemed strictly one-dimensional,that is,exploiting stereotypes.

    I think that well will dry up pretty quickly.
