How do I put this lightly? How about: Every single word that has just dribbled from Jean Chretien’s mouth in this reprehensible speech is nothing short of a god damn lie. Chretien’s government never intended to meet the Kyoto targets. Chretien never put human rights above business deals in China.
The defining moment of Chretien’s years in power was his initial defense of the corruption of the sponsorship scandal. He justified the corruption by lauding the goals of the Sponsorship program: To raise the “public profile” of the federalist cause in Quebec. Could there possibly have been any better summary than Jean Chretien’s methods in politics? That the ends justified the means. No matter how many lives were destroyed, no matter how many dollars were wasted or diverted to Liberal pocketbooks, as long as the prime minister got his way.
His tenure as prime minister is a black mark on Canadian history, and this speech is a black mark on the Liberal Party’s convention.

Harper didn’t “break Canada’s word” on Kyoto. He merely admitted that the Liberals had broken theirs.
The ONLY reason Chretien ever cared about trade with China is a company called CITIC Pacific Ltd - subsidiary of Power Corp - to further enrich his daughter and son-in-law. Chretien was classless, corrupt and venal to the end.

If you missed Harper hitting back at Chretien in QP yesterday, here you go: Right Hon. Stephen Harper (Prime Minister, CPC): Mr. Speaker, once again, the Commissioner of the RCMP has accepted his responsibilities and taken appropriate action. We have accepted that action, and I would call on the opposition to do the same thing. [...]
