Is the Dinning Campaign Buying Memberships/Votes

November 20, 2006 · By H. Cameron

Without even looking hard, the negative news surrounding the Dinning campaign continues to flow. The Calgary Herald reports that the Dinning campaign has purchased party memberships for voters - without telling them:

A southern Alberta couple is critical of the political tactics of would-be premier Jim Dinning and the Alberta Tory party after they received two paid memberships from the candidate’s team — despite never having signed up with his campaign.

[...]

“I’m pissed off . . . this card came with my name and I want to know where they got it from,” Livingston, 40, fumed in a phone interview with the Herald. “We’re going to for sure vote, but it won’t be for Jim Dinning, because it worked in reverse for us — it’s like, ‘Screw you buddy.’ ”

Just an honest mistake you say? But what are the chances the same mistake would be made twice?

Valerie Livingston’s membership was delivered in late October from the Dinning campaign. She was about to throw out the envelope before curiosity got the best of her.

She opened the envelope and a membership card in her misspelled name fell out. Less than two weeks later, another membership card and letter signed by Dinning arrived in Brett’s name.
