The arrest of Cameron Ward foiled an alleged plot to “pie the Prime Minister” in August, 2002, Vancouver police are continuing to insist, even though they have failed to produce any evidence against the civil-rights lawyer.

Mr. Ward is suing Vancouver police, the city and the provincial government for unspecified damages for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment.

The 49-year-old lawyer was arrested on Aug. 1, 2002, handcuffed, taken to jail and strip-searched on suspicion of being part of an alleged pie plot against Jean Chrétien, who was in town to speak at an event in the city’s Chinatown.”

The police made other arrests in order to protect the dignity of the prime minister:

…the RCMP arrested another man that day for carrying a piece of pineapple cake near the site of the event that Mr. Chrétien attended briefly that day.

Isn’t this just the perfect metaphor for the RCMP?
