The Problem With The Globe and Mail

October 21, 2006 · By

I was flipping through the Globe this morning and came across an editorial on the MacKay / Stronach name-calling controversy that I wanted to comment on. But this article about Jack Layton’s take on the issue covers essentially the same ground and leaps to the same wrong-headed conclusions, so I’ve linked to it instead.

Since when is calling a Member of Parliament a dog an overtly sexual or sexist statement? Since when is an inappropriate joke (off mic) at an MP’s expense an attack on Canadians of that Member’s gender generally? Is that the new paradigm? When I hear Harper being catcalled from the Liberal and NDP benches am I to assume that at least some of this hooting and hollering are attacks on Canadian masculinity? Ridiculous.

I also find it interesting that Layton and Stronach appear to have co-ordinated their press releases, in that each have specifically stated the ludicrous notion that this over-blown excercise in self-righteous indignation on their part will dissuade women from entering politics.

Because really, if they hadn’t made an issue of it to begin with the world would never have known what Mackay said. His comments weren’t entered into Hansard. If Canadians of either gender are giving politics a second thought because of this, the Liberals and the NDP have only themselves to blame.

But I have a feeling that young Canadians who have an interest in politics are already aware, from years of watching the governing Liberals verbally abuse the opposition during Question Period, of the indecorous nature of off-mic insults traded on the floor of Parliament. I’m confident that they’ll see this brouhaha for what it is – a cheap attempt to turn a much-publicized personal animosity into a national scandal. Their efforts will benefit neither Canadian women nor their own political careers.

“BBC Admits they are Biased” “the BBC is dominated by trendy, Left-leaning liberals who are biased against Christianity and in favour of multiculturalism.” “Gray Lady’s with Jumpin’ Jack” “The NY Times is…silly” “The Problem with the Globe and Mail” “CTV Idealist Nutbars”

    Which is worse?

Stronach and Layton coordinating press releases OR Harper and Bush?

At least Stronach and Layton only happens once in a while, instead of every day.

One should also note that the Minister in question started it when he had a little crying fit in front of the cameras when he got his ass dumped.

And you guys call this guy a man because he can call her a “dog” (i.e. bitch) in the House of Commons?

    Good one.

Odd how taking a cheap shot at mackay about getting dumped is the moral high ground while his remark has the libs up in arms about decorum and such.

Who said anything about the moral high ground. This place is anything but that, Virgil. Just read some of the smack printed on this website about all sorts of people.

Why the quotes around the word “dog”? None of the parties claim he used that word, only the media has insinuated it. He allegedly said three words – “you have her”. Smarter than Ezra apparently blindly believes what he is told by the media, even leaping to what they want to insinuate – that he called her a “bitch”. So easily the fools are manipulated by MSM propoganda. Smarter than Ezra yet dumb as sheep.
