Rent-a-Cop Sheriffs and the Dinning Campaign

October 17, 2006 · By H. Cameron

Have you checked out Dinning’s weblog yet? If not, you’d better - there are some real gems available. Take this one for example,

This message is for all RCMP members their families, friends and supporters in the Province. I’ve heard through the grapevine an email is circulating in RCMP ranks suggesting I want to replace the RCMP in Alberta. The note says:

“My sources tell me that there are two front-runners: Jim Dinning - who would see us replaced, and Ed Stelmach - who has publicly announced that he is not interested in pursuing a provincial police force.”

It goes on to urge Mounties “to consider buying a PC party membership for

$5 and voting for a candidate who will NOT REPLACE US with a bunch of rent-a-cop sheriffs!!”

Did Dinning just include a reference to the new Alberta Sheriff’s as “a bunch of rent-a-cops”?

Is this yet another example of the “off-the-cuff” remarks we’ve seen made popular by the current Premier? Can Dinning expect much respect from the “350 Sheriff’s (formerly known as Provincial Protection Officers) who play an important role in Alberta law enforcement?”

Doubtful…

Impressive lack of knowledge of the issue.

    By Dinning that is.

Good catch, H. Cameron. An Albertan police force would do the province proud, much more so than the scandal-plagued yahoos that are the RCMP. Yet another issue on which Dinning has missed the boat.

I agree, good catch, H. Cameron.

Dinning’s remarks, while favourably citing a mockery of Alberta’s sheriff’s, are otherwise entirely misleading.

The RCMP will never be REPLACED in Alberta—unless Alberta separates from Canada—because they are a federal police force, remaining present as they do in Newfoundland, Quebec, and Ontario (which all have provincial police forces). They simply will not play as active a role in law enforcement in Alberta as it concerns provincial jurisdiction. However, federal jurisdiction remains strident, so they will be around but maybe in lesser numbers.

Rather, would be around, should Alberta go all the way to a provincial police force.

The comment was in the email circulating it was not a comment made by Jim Dinning. Please read the context of the article more carefully

So? Is it still appropriate for Dinning to quote something that offensive on his site?

Agreed and that was my point!

Perhaps someone should email one of these “rent-a-cop sheriffs” and see how they feel about Dinning’s paraphrasing ignorant comments.

Rent-a-Cop Sheriff’s you say…..Last time I checked the RCMP were the “contract” (rented) Police force in Alberta. Alberta Sheriffs are Peace Officers in and for the Province Of Alberta. Writing is on the wall for all you Royal Red supporters.
