I know many young women who look up to Ms. Campbell as a symbol. It is possible for a woman to be Prime Minister of Canada. It is not necessary to argue that she was Prime Minister for a long time, or that she was historically significant. She was the Prime Minister.

The cheeky ad was just one of a number of gaffes. It proved to be a nail in the coffin to a ship which was already leaking pretty badly. It wasn’t just due to Kim’s (correct) declaration that the country would take until about 1997 to recover. Things like her inability to hold her own in the (French) debates can’t be pinned on John Tory.

Face it. Someone drove them to those ads.

You can turn this into a battle of the sexes or some kind of female empowerment argument if you want, but it just shows you’re dodging the issue. Don’t pretend that this is about female potential or anything of the sort. I think we’d be mocking you even more severely if you had compared yourself to John Turner. Especially after his “I touch the children” thing.

I don’t think you should be trying to excuse the fact that Kim Campbell was simply not a good leader. And it’s not as though there’s any kind of shortage of kickass female politicians (Margaret Thatcher, anyone?). It’s that you chose to idolize the John Turner of them all.

Sinking ship? When Campbell called the election she was riding high in the polls. The debacle during the election and the ensuing humiliation was not Mulroney’s doing.

I don’t think that there was ONE Canadian public when it came to Mulroney. The Bloc pulled its way, Reform went another, and Ontario just went Lib. All for different reasons. The one group among these three almost solely motivated by GST and FT would have been Ontario –and that’s excusable. Nationally, they have not been on the right side of things since 1984.

In fact, one could argue that Mulroney left politics with his tale between his legs so that he didn’t have to face the largest single defeat of a government in Canadian history.

Syd Phylis, with a respectable pseudonym like that, has claimed representation for McGill and for Alberta. That in itself is quite the claim since no authority has been granted to her for that or any other purpose. To claim representation in that manner over taking her clothes off (tastefully!) in front of a camera requires an ego the size of the Alberta surplus.

No one understood better than Kim Campbell that “Charisma without substance is a dangerous thing!” Syd has chosen her idol well.

Heh. Even if she had taken over after Vander Zalm had kicked off, the resurrection of the BC Liberal Party ensured a split vote (and therefore, Mike Harcourt’s lovely reign of error).

Kim would’ve been fucked there, too.

Most people don’t know that Kim Campbell was also a a Socred member of the B.C. Legislature before she was recruited by Mulroney as a star B.C. candidate. If she had hung around, she would have been in a good position to have become leader and premier when Bill vander Zalm left. I tend to think she would have been a good premier.
