Alberta Tories Deal a Blow to Ralph Klein
April 1, 2006 · By kaqchikel
I just got back from Calgary. The numbers are in.
The Alberta Conservative Party delegates to the convention voted 55-45% in favour of having a leadership election. Such is the question mandated by the party’s constitution, which under the circumstances seems odd. The premier has already announced his retirement (even if it is way into the future), and there already is a leadership race under way.
In essence, considering that it’s a leadership review, the results mean that 55% of the party members approve of the leadership of Ralph Klein. A devastating result for Klein.
Stay tuned for the premier’s reaction.

You mean 55% against having a review. The king is dead. Long live the king???
Unbelievable. No one predicted that it would be this low.
Yes, Benevolent. 55% voted against the leadership election. I knew that I was too tired to be writing. Thanks for that.
Actually, I predicted 55-60% but figured I was wrong in that while many may be ready for Ralph to leave sooner rather than later, not as many would be willing to vote that way.
Ralph’s ‘nose for politics’ really let him down on this one. Alberta is ready for a change; the last election showed that. His convoluted & misrepresented/misunderstood/poorly-explained “Third Way” is an example of what’s missing. Clarity.
Personally, I’m a huge fan of Ralph but I’ve been wanting him to retire for the last year.
