Garth Turner Redux

February 10, 2006 · By Peter Rempel

It is important to remember what kind of man is currently bestowing his wisdom upon all of us little people:

“If you own Nortel, or a mutual fund holding it, don’t bail out now… If you do not own Nortel, then this is the time to start accumulating it.
– Garth Turner, 2000

“I am constantly amazed at the assumption people make that they can manage their own finances… most people can’t. They don’t have a clue how to pick stocks.
– Garth Turner, 2002

Yeah, there’s something a bit off with Garth Turner. I’m not really into psychopathology, except, of course, when I’m in the mood for condescension, but I suspect GT was bullied a lot for being nerdy, chubby, and asocial as a child. What else explains such an exposé with the national media, and four days into his party forming government. His justifications don’t exactly jive and he appears to like the spotlight of rogue, man of the people MP a little too much for his own intellectual credence. A defender of independent MPs simply can’t advocate penalising floor-crossers and not come across as a little schizoid.

Conservative hypocrisy at its worse… At least Garth Turner is standing up for the very principles he was running on last month. While I knew all along the Conservatives would be more corrupt than any other party in the history of confederation (history has proved me right - isn’t mulroney still under investigation?) - I had no idea it would be withen 25 minutes of being sworn into office… this is too rich. You can kiss a chance at a majority government goodbye for at least another 15 years. This is the type of crap Harper is pulling with a weak minority - imagine what he would do with a majority?

Shame on all of you who actually defend this. Good for Garth Turner - apparently the only Conservative MP with honor and dignity out there.

Thanks for the partisan Liberal perspective Frank. Maybe Garth could become Liberal leader? No one else appears to want the job, and Garth has been doing a bang-up job for Bill Graham already.

The tragic part of the Garth Turner story is that he actually has a fairly solid record of achievement himself, if not quite as stellar as David Emerson, and could have been a capable cabinet minister.

Except that he doesn’t know how to balance honest criticism with being a team player.

I was surprised that he didn’t make it into cabinet or as a parliamentary secretary, but his public temper tantrum has made it clear why.

[...] We already knew that Garth knew nothing about investing; we then learned that he knew nothing about Parliament. Apparently he knows about as much about the law. When are people going to realize that that neatly-trimmed beard adorns an entirely empty head? [...]

    Good point Loyalist!

For those interested, Kim Campbell phoned into a radio show Emerson was on today and offered her support for what she called “principled” action. Good! Even she is distancing herself from Turner.

Great - Conservatives distancing themselves from the only honest guy in the party. That alone speaks volumes on your “ethics”.

    We must have some deference;
Garth has become King of the John!

You know if he could keep his mouth shut, he might have a decent funeral…

Garth Turner, King of the John, singin’ “rubber ducky, you’re the one!”

Great - now conservatives are calling for the death of the lone honest MP amongst them. Too rich… simply too rich. All the Conservative bloggers are doing a dis-service to their own cause. Hate filled and American Right-wing wannabes - going down with the ship no matter how horrible the cost.

Got something to say?
