Costco Fires Catholic Over Knights of Columbus Hall Case?
December 16, 2005 · By Tom Cerber
Via Small Dead Animals, Lifesite News is reporting on one of the individuals involved with the British Columbia Human Rights case where 2 lesbians won $1,000 because the Knights of Columbus reneged on their agreement to rent them their hall after the KoC learned they were gay (decision here in pdf).
Dan Hauser claims Costco fired him in retaliation of his views on homosexuality and over his involvement with the Knights of Columbus. He claims his supervisor strongly objected to his views and concocted to have him fired (for other reasons). He also claims there’s no way the couple didn’t know about the Knights of Columbus and its affiliation. Lifesite News reports the hall is part of a larger complex with a Catholic church and other facilities. Moreover, Hauser challenges the couple’s claim they found the hall by driving around (the reason they didn’t know anything about the KoC) because the sign “hall for rent” would have been too small to see from the road.
I’m in no position to judge over this he said, he said, they said episode. But something about it smells fishy and I hope more comes of it to clarify the matter.

Why do religious people always feel the need to attack segments of society (blacks, Jews, Gays, Athiests, Muslims, etc)? Why do they always feel the need to focus their hate on others…? Imagine if they actually practised what Jesus was trying to promote? You know “Crazy-liberal-wacko” things like helping the poor, helping the weak, helping the sick, teaching tolerance and love. What a bunch of sad hypocrites with nothing going for them in life. No wonder they feel the need to bother other people constantly - Conservative values (and they have the balls to say that “Liberals” are the ones attempting to get involved in everyone’s life. Wasn’t it Pierre Trudeau who stated the government had no business in people’s bedrooms? That sure as hell never came from a conservative. Conservatism is about spreading intolerance and hate. Thankfully 70% of country thinks conservatism has no place north of the US.
Jason C: Thanks for all your well-thought-out comments. You might find my previous take on how certain liberal positions (e.g., same-sex marriage) have nothing to do with preserving private freedoms.
Tom: I read it. Sounds like the usual stuff - yada yada yada. You should write speeches for the White House.
While I don’t argee with your postion - it was well-written.
“Why does Jason C always feel the need to set up strawmen and then knock them down?”
Because his arguments are tendentious and pre-determined, that’s why. As usual, this particular example of a soon-destined-to-be nutritional supplement (Soylent Green) HASN’T ACTUALLY READ THE PIECE.
If he had, he’d find out the only ones doing the “attacking” were those who were going after the Catholic gent.
I’m no Catholic, but even I can actually *read.*
Why did you quote yourself?
“Why does Jason C always feel the need to set up strawmen and then knock them down?
Glad to read that you can read.
Sorry to read that you can’t.
Ah well, don’t you worry your pretty little empty head about nothin’, my little nutritional supplement! You’ll soon enough be doing your part for the Greater Good…
…at least, if we can figure out a way to properly vitamin-fortify you.
Garth: Are you retarded or just pretending to be? Very typical of the right - you have no message yourself so you simply attack those who do on a personal level. You do not have any constructive arguements, so you simply attempt to discredit those who do. Very common and typical right-wing thing to do. Lay off the kool-aid a bit.
Not sure what nutritional suppliments have to do with anything… but if it makes you feel better talking about them - congrats.
