Bush Gives Head a Shake: Nominates Alito

October 31, 2005 · By

President Bush nominated 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

David Forte over at Ashbrook thinks it’s a good choice. Check it out.

UPDATE: Volokh muses on how the prospect of 5 Roman Catholics on the USSC affects US legal culture, and US conservatism in general (where 3 of the 5 are conservatives)

Looks like the far right Christian conservatives have got the judge they think Bush owes them and the tear-America-apart fight that they want. Pity for them as I think it will do more harm to them in the end, just like their swarming on Schiavo aliented their supporters. Especially after Miers, this smells a heck of a lot like the “litmus test” that Bush said he didn’t have.

Anyway, I’ve got a few of his judgments summarized over at Cerberus, as well as links to the reactions and summaries of others.

Glad to be Canadian at this time of year.

Nah, you rant too much. I’d rather read Volokh’s commentary.

Ouch. I rant too much. Come by some more, I think you’ll find our take on the world a little more surprising than that. The early CW on Alito on both left and right is that he is a strong pro-life conservative judge. Saying so isn’t a rant. I actually haven’t made up my mind (not that it matters one way or the other if I do, being Canadian and all): I’m just linking to what others – left and right and reasoned – think so people can make up their own mind.

Anyway, appreciate the link to Volokh’s. Always like a blog that doesn’t hold firm to what someone else dictates a conservative or a liberal must be. I’m going to add it to my posting in an update.
