Cheney to Visit Alberta

August 18, 2005 · By Tom Cerber

Via Albertanicus, the Calgary Herald reported last weekend that US Vice-President Dick Cheney will visit Alberta in September and will tour the Athabasca oilsands.

The reasons why need no elaboration when one understands that Canada is the US’s #1 oil exporter - even more than Saudi Arabia.

But his visit also needs to be understood in the context of the recent sparring over the US’s softwood lumber protectionism. Klein made it very clear that Canada cannot use oil as a bargaining chip over the softwood lumber dispute. I suspect clearer minds in Ottawa understand that Canada would be shooting itself in the foot if it tried (i.e., Jack Layton is not one of those clear minds).

The other thing to bear in mind is that Cheney’s visit illuminates Alberta’s clout in managing its bilateral relations with Canada’s biggest trading partner.

    OH YEAH!

Secret seperation talks with Dick Cheney.

Leftist Moonbats are gonna foam at the mouth over this.

I can’t wait to exchange my fallen dead maple leaf for the stars and stripes.

However, given the recent US attitudes toward the rules they agreed to in NAFTA, should we be giving the current US administration the proverbial time of day on trade matters of any sort?

Given the rumblings out of Ontario for stealing Alberta’s wealth, it makes sense to talk to Dick Cheney.

[...] Meanwhile, one should note that the other “elephant in the room” at the premiers’ meeting in Banff was news that US Vice-President Dick Cheney’s visiting the Alberta oilsands in September. Memo to the Liberal cabinet, McGuinty, and others: do you think it’s prudent to target the largest supplier of oil and gas to the US? How do you think Ontario’s auto industry, BC’s softwood lumber industry, Nova Scotia’s cod industry, etc., would fare if the US got concerned over the security of its oil supply? [...]

So does that mean the Indians in alberta will sing and dance for dear old Cheney as Ralph Klein smiles in the grandstands. Treaty 6, 7, and 8 are hosting a Treaty Gathering on September 27, 28, 29 in Edmonton. The Indians who get no royalty on oil will probably blow the chance to tell Cheney to put some pressure on Canada.

I won’t be attending the Treaty Gathering because the Indians never seem to take action when they have a chance to. I get tired on hearing the same talk.
