Breaking News on the CBC: Grewal Tapes May or May Not Have Been Altered

June 2, 2005 · By

A brilliant news story on the CBC news this evening: Following on a suggestion from the Liberal government — doing their funder’s bidding once again — the CBC hired an expert to examine the Grewal recordings. The big news? It’s inconclusive.

The big story is that the tapes may or not have been altered. Yup – that covers the entire universe of logical possibilities, just like there may or may not be life on Mars or there may or may not be a tooth fairy. Who needs an expert to tell you that? You don’t need a meteorologist to tell you that it may or may not be raining outside.

In other words, it’s not news. It’s like saying that Paul Martin may or may not be a crook. That’s perfectly true, with absolute logical certainty. But you wouldn’t run the story — if you’re a reputable journalist — until you have evidence one way or the other.

But at the CBC, they ran it anyway — and spun it to sound like it was news. The CBC announcer led with a breathless introduction saying the tapes “may” have been altered. Then they cut to the reporter, who again excitedly said that “maybe” there had been an edit . But then, he admitted — maybe not. The expert they hired said that he couldn’t really tell. He said he thought he may have heard something that made him wonder, but he couldn’t really say. In fact, he said that with the evidence he had been given, it was impossible to tell.

The bottom line: The CBC’s expert says its inconclusive.

But again, in his concluding comments that’s not how the CBC reporter spun the story. He claimed instead that it proves that questions will continue to be asked about the authenticity of the tapes.

Well yes, the CBC will continue to ask questions to cast doubts upon the story — just as long as their Liberal benefactors tell them to.

After all, whoever pays the CBC piper, calls the CBC tune.
