The NDP lost too

May 20, 2005 · By Hugo Chesshire

The myopia of NDP supporters, braying and cheering over the Liberal victory in the House of Commons, is ridiculous. They didn’t get the budget they wanted, they got a couple of amendments, and Layton almost certainly sold himself cheaply. What the NDP should really consider is that they have helped the Liberals defy Parliamentary convention and govern illegitimately for over a week, enabling them to play games and fudge the numbers so as to snatch victory out of the jaws of their rightful defeat. In full what’s-bad-for-Harper-is-good-for-us mode, NDP supporters see this as a victory, but they can be sure that if the NDP ever forms the official opposition and the situation is revisited, the Liberals will not hesitate to use the same tactics against them, and then the NDP will ironically have already helped them set a precedent for doing things their way. We shall see who cheers for the Liberals then.
