NDP “level-headed”?

April 26, 2005 · By Hugo Chesshire

Ralph Surette writes in the Chronicle-Herald and Rabble that the NDP is the only sane and decent party at the moment, for its benevolence in trying to prop up the corrupt, lame-duck Liberal government. He arrogantly opines that “the country doesn’t want an election now”, without citing a single poll, survey or study to back this up. Presumably Surette has gleaned this from his immediate social circle, and finds that such anecdotal evidence is more compelling than actual polls which show Liberal support in freefall, or that only 18% of the electorate believes that Martin was not responsible for Adscam.

This is quite bad enough, but for Surette to then endorse the know-nothing idiot policies of the NDP is ridiculous. The tone of his column, however, suggests that the fate of the nation is very far from his mind. He is concerned solely with “saving” party politics (as if it could be saved - even George Washington was accused of pandering to land speculation lobbyists and of using the state to enhance his own family fortunes). It does not particularly matter to him if the NDP plunges the country into recession, pushes unemployment percentages into the teens, impoverishes ethnic minorities and single mothers, and so forth. For a party of the people, and a columnist supporting such a party, to make the welfare of Canadians take a backseat to Parliamentary stability is just obscene.
