Suddenly, “Fat” Isn’t Bad

April 19, 2005 · By

Via No Left Turns, we hear that being a bit fat, or should I say, “corpulently endowed,” is not such a bad thing:

The new analysis found that obesity ?? being extremely overweight ?? is indisputably lethal. But like several recent smaller studies, it found that people who are modestly overweight actually have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight.

Biostatistician Mary Grace Kovar, a consultant for the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center in Washington, said “normal” may be set too low for today’s population.

Ah yes, all we need to do is redefine “normal.”

However, if you’ve kept up with my Aristophanic criticism of egalitarianism, being considered “normal” may not be such a good thing in our culture that celebrates victimhood.

So it’s your choice: either sup from the feast of envy and entitlements, or stay not so fat (or corpulently endowed).
