I have to agree with everything Eric Goldman says. Except I've never been attractive. I do make good money, but that's about it. I get made fun of everytime I walk down the street. I had people try to spit on me because I am ugly. It's ridiculous. I just want to be left alone. I am a quiet person who keeps to myself, I have a spent a life of giving to those around me. I treat everyone the way I want to be treated, but it doesn't matter. I had some woman glare at me yesterday even though she was being friendly with everyone else. I try not to fall into self-pity because it really isn't going to help, I'm just going to be a depressed and ugly person. I don't want to be bitter. I try to go everyday being a happy person, but when I get some idiots trying to spit on me for not being beautiful then it's hard. There are times when I won't leave my apartment for days because I feel to scared to go outside because I know I am going to have people yell stupid crap at me. People seem to treat ugly women worse than ugly men, because people feel that women are supposed to be beautiful. I wear make up, I try to make my hair look nice, I wear nice clothes but it doesn't matter. I still get made fun of. I don't want to be like my father who took his life, but there are times when I am close to doing it even though I know it would hurt those who do love me. that's the only reason why I am here, for them. If it weren't for them, I'd go. I will never have kids or a husband.
The worst part about it, no one believes me. I try to vent my feelings to people about what happens, I try to get advice about what to do to stop feeling so bad about myself. They either think I'm exaggerating, or they say it's my fault for not being confident.

It seems to me that trade is the exchange of things that people want. The extra money is being paid to people for the quality of their appearance; the skill or service they provide grants them a certain amount, and the rest of the money they earn is from being sociable, charming, and/or physically attractive, which is something desirable to the person paying more. There can even be a discrepancy in the amount of skill the position has; I may accept a less skilled worker if their demeanor or attitude (which are the most important aspects of appearance to me) were positive. I find "attractive" to mean a combination of physical and mental awareness to the point where I feel a challenge and a gift in their presence. If I have someone who can make 10 doodads on the line, but I have someone who can laugh with me and crack wise and smile and they only make 7 doodads on the line in the same amount of time, that's wonderful, and valuable. Morale is higher, productivity means more than just dollars and cents.

We all get a random shuffle when we're born; when someone does well with what they got, whatever that it, that is attractive.

Physical attractiveness isn't just a universal "this color hair, this spacing of eyes", etc. It is a very physical act, the stance, the breath, the calm. That's my two cents.

People may not like each other. I may have a negative view on certain people. Howewer, that doesnt mean people shouldnt question these ways of thinking.

I say its a very ridicilous thing to be so judgemental just cause a person is "ugly".

Even "ugly" people can be interesting, once you get to know them.

The funny thing, though, is the fact that people who call other people ugly are often not that "attractive", themselves.

BTW, Ive read that theres a certain name for this, its called cacophobia.

eric goldman, ur right. in western society no 1 wants to be considered ugly, or not at least normal looking in the western sense, and that's why there's no ugly rights groups. You know I have wondered why no-1 does anything about this issue, and you just stated why.

Although there are clear examples of very attractive people being discriminated against, and those examples should never be treated lightly. No discrimination should. Ugly people, by far have much more discrimination in our looks oriented culture. I was starting forward on my HS basketball team,. I was a star runnung back for our foot ball team. I had very good looks and lots of girlfriends growing up.
I was in a car accident got disfigured, and the amount of discrimination I suffered sickened me. I kept my confidence and still led a great life, however the discrimination was real. it literally happened all the time every day. In situaltions that attractive people (like me before the accident) never see. In a person looking at you with anger (instead of the hellos and smiled=s I used to get. to people not holding doors. In people screaming at you how ugly you are and are scaring my kids. to a women slapping me in te face while i was simply waiting for a subway, because "some one as frightning as me should never leave the house" to not getting promotions and told my lookd=s do not represent "the companies image"
Please spare me the self pity crap about how tough it is to be good looking. I was there it was so much easier than being ugly, it is not even close. Again that is not to say people of all looks, and for many reasons do not suffer real discrimination, it is just to say being ugly, not average, but ugly is real discrimination. i would even argue More than women, blacks, jews, hispanics, gays etc
The problem is there is no ugly rights groups, because people do not want to associate themselves as being ugly. You would be shocked what ugly people have to go through every day. The discrimination is rampant.
PS after many sugeries, I do not look ugly anymore. Like I said before, I never felt ugly, I always had confidence and still do, however I saw the real discrimination first hand. It is real !

"Beautiful women --> they have likely worked twice as hard as their less-attractive counterparts to prove that they are capable and competent. Most beautiful people have endured great mental, physical, spiritual and emotional sufferings and should be revered for their strength and resilience"

all I can say is WOW! I should go drink some water just so I can spit it out all over my desk and say "what the hell???"
There are no greater victims than the beautiful intelligent people of the world....

being attractive is very difficult. For the most part we are treated like loose women with little to say, and worst of all with no feelings. We are dehumanized by those who envy, fear, and / or want to possess us. Navigating the jealousy mine field is also dangerous. I know of young women who are intensely bullied or even murdered by their less attractive peers. A beautiful woman will be considered everything from a slut to a bitch – just because of her appearance. Being left out by the “ugly ducklings” is also painful, especially in the formative years.

Parental thwarting of a child’s beauty so that the siblings will not be jealous is also common. In my teens, I babysat for a family who condoned the abuse of one of their daughters because they had it in their mind that her beauty made her a corrupt person in comparison to her siblings. It was awful to see, and I often wonder what became of sweet little Janelle. She is in my prayers.

I do admit that attractive women in some cases may land jobs or gain the “interest” of the boss because of their looks. However, this type of hiring does not have a happy outcome for the attractive person. It usually ends up that they are approached by the supervisor for sexual favours – Disgusting!! Beautiful women (and sometimes men) are treated like they are good for nothing except sex. It is sick, and no one should ever have to suffer like that.

Throughout my life I have had to make concessions for less attractive people and I am tired of it. I am not a bitch, or a slut, or stupid, or mean, or materialistic…. In fact these traits have little to do with appearance. I deserve a decent job, husband, family and social life as much as the next person. A wise man once told me that if someone is jealous or envious of you then you should have nothing to do with them – even if it is a relative. After acting on his advice my life has become much better with more real successes, un-thwarted by those who think I owe it to them to sacrifice something because they are less pretty, less healthy and/or less intelligent. It is also interesting to note that as I become older and less attractive the rude and hurtful treatment is diminishing. Most of the pain in my life can be traced directly back to jealous, fearful and/or perverted people. People enslaved by their envy should not be given responsibilities that affect the lives of others.

I admire beautiful women from modest families who become successful in non-sex professions – they have likely worked twice as hard as their less-attractive counterparts to prove that they are capable and competent. Most beautiful people have endured great mental, physical, spiritual and emotional sufferings and should be revered for their strength and resilience. I pray for those who are working in sex related trades because they feel there is no other option for them. Jealousy is the root of all evil.

Hey all. I feel a bit sad reading what has been written here. Why do people always feel like there's no hope if they think that 'society' has declared them are ugly? It is only by others imaginations that you are judged and more, by your own thoughts. If anyone really thinks that they are ugly and discriminated towards, why don't they do something about it?
Start looking after yourself better. Its true that confidence comes from the inside. If you feel good about yourself, then others around you will feel good too.

My advice (as someone who used to be ''ugly'' only because i believed myself to be that) :
Start doing excersise on a regular basis. Stop stuffing your face with junkfood. But the most important thing is to become more interested in other people and stop self obsessing about how others see you.

Hope that helps :)

Dear Anonymous

Though I appreciate your keen insight into finding a rational solution to my dilemma, the sentiment I interpreted by your response was that the "geeks, "nerds" and "misfits" should all band together since no one else will accept them! We as a society can do better than rewarding the so called beautiful and stigmatizing the less than comely.

Dear Anonymous

Though I appreciate your keen insight into finding a rational solution to my personal dilemma, what you are plainly advocating is an "ugly people alliance club." The "nerds", "geeks" and other so-called socially unacceptable "misfits" banding together to unite as one pathetic one. This ideology is not only perpetrating a negative stereotype but it emboldens the stigma that face those who are discriminated against based solely on physicality and image. What we need to espouse is a slogan that treats every individual fairly and equal. Why should the beautiful receive all the aplomb!

Ms. Fagen,

Go nerd. Seriously. I'm not saying this out of cruelty, such as "lower your standards", but "nerds", "geeks" and other social outcase will be more liekly to apprecaite your intelligence and talents. Being on the outside of the whole social thing themselves, they are also more likely to understand what you are going through. And best of all, in a while when looks fade, you'll still have your smarts and personality, with the added bonus of a caring companion who sees more to you that your outward appearance.

As a unattractive woman of below average looks, I have seen the disparity attributed to those who do not meet the physical aesthetics of todays looks based society. I make below the acceptable wage for a person with three years of advanced educational merits. I feel ostracized by those around me in social situations and have little to no contact with others in forging positive relationships. Even family members have treated me poorly do to my homely appearance and take no initiative in my personal aspirations and goals leaving me feeling isolated and useless. Is their any positive advance for a self acclaimed wall flower alone in an unacceptable world? Would love some feedback!
