All hail our newest despots

October 4, 2004 · By Hugo Chesshire

The two newest justices in the Supreme Court, Louise Charron and Rosalie Abella, were sworn in today. Protestors decried a history of biased judgements outside the court.

Regardless, the rule of the Gang of Nine continues. Nine unelected people get to decide which laws are right and which are wrong, which democratic legislation is acceptable and which is not, and when a law needs to change or be struck down. The Supreme Court represents a sickening concentration of power and obviously its supporters are blind to Lord Acton’s axiom: Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. There is no reason to believe that these judges or any others will refrain from trying to bring their vision of Canada to life whether or not the Canadian people wish it.

Latest justices sworn into Supreme Court

Louise Charron and Rosalie Abella were sworn in as justices of the Supreme Court of Canada on Monday, while demonstrators outside accused them of pushing a radical, feminist agenda.

Charron and Abella bring the Supreme Court to full strength – nine members – for a busy fall sitting that begins with a landmark hearing on same-sex marriage.

About 25 demonstrators carried signs outside the court accusing the new justices of a history of biased judgments.
